Samsung solidified its spot atop the U.S. LCD TV market in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to IHS iSuppli (IHS), by accounting for nearly one-quarter (23.6 percent) of LCD TV shipments in the U.S. Shipments of Samsung LCD TVs reached a record high for a quarter, representing the largest share of the market ever posted by Samsung on a quarterly basis. Irvine, Calif.-based Vizio was a distant second with a 15.4 percent share of the market, while LG (12.4 percent), Sony (8 percent) and Toshiba (7.8 percent) round out… View this story

Strolling through the CES 2012 show floor yesterday, we noticed that virtually every major CE brand – and lots of small ones – were touting their products as part of a smart home ecosystem. While many stopped short of integrating with lighting and other home automation devices, the product roadmaps are clear: They’re going there, starting with thermostats for most of them. CE Pro captured this practice run at the Toshiba booth (video below), where actors demonstrated the seamless transition from the smart home to the smart car. “Toshiba is… View this story

Toshiba 4K Glasses-Free 3D TV
Grant Clauser | 01/09 08:40 AM, 1 Comment
Toshiba treated us to a special preview of its autostereoscopic (glasses-free) 3D TV prior to the opening of CES 2012. Not all details were complete, but the US delivery of this breakthrough TV is getting closer. The 55-inch TV uses a 4K x 2K LED LCD panel. For regular 2D viewing, all content is upscaled to 4K. For 3D, the glasses-free experience is delivered at 720p for up to nine viewers. Each of the nine viewers needs to be seated in specific “sweet spot” locations, but a face tracking system… View this story

The October/November monsoon flooding in Thailand has made a huge impact on the production of hard drive discs for computers and other IT equipment, according to Forbes. So if you are spec'ing a home network system, make sure to check on product availability and price. According to Forbes, major plants for Western Digital and Toshiba were flooded, and facilities for Seagate and Hitachi have been shut down, though not flooded themselves. Forbes says 50 percent of all hard drive capacity has been down several weeks. The Thailand factories represent 60… View this story

The road to convergence between A/V and IT just hit a bump. According to TechRadar, millions and millions of Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI cables, sold by manufacturers such as Apple, Toshiba, Dell and HP, are unlicensed and do not meet the HDMI specification. TechRadar cites HDMI Licensing LLC as saying that since the cable only has one HDMI connector, it does not meet the specification, which calls for connectors on both ends. Therefore, the cable itself cannot be tested to see if it conforms to the HDMI spec. Cables with one Mini… View this story

Integrators from across the West Coast recently traveled to the DSI Expo in Costa Mesa, Calif., to get a glimpse at the latest innovations in connected TVs. Demos and training from LG, Toshiba, Sony and Mitsubishi showcased 3D cinema and smart TV opportunities for dealers, many of whom came from satellite installation backgrounds. "This is the third year we have done the Expo series. It's important for local integrators who are not part of buying groups to be able to get the education they need," says Meg Berg of DSI… View this story

As much as consumers complain about having to wear funky glasses to experience 3D TV, two models of glasses-free systems (autostereoscopic or AS) are not selling well in Japan. That’s what a report from Bloomberg says about Toshiba’s recent entry into the AS TV market. Toshiba introduced two AS models late in 2010, a 20-inch model based on its Cell processor and a 12-inch model that uses some of the Cell features, but not the full monty. Apparently, Toshiba is disappointed in the sales of those two models. The 20-inch… View this story

Mix outdoor entertainment with 3D TV, and what do you get? A giant new LED display from Toshiba. During Integrated Systems Europe 2011, Toshiba demonstrated the technology for the first time. Charley Bocklet, national sales manager for LED Display Systems, says the Toshiba product is unique for a few reasons. First, most 3D-capable LED systems are made for the indoors, while the Toshiba version is designed for outdoor venues. And the new display uses inexpensive passive 3D glasses so event organizers need not worry about powering and distributing pricey active… View this story

Toshiba recently began selling two small glasses-free 3D TVs - called autostereoscopic - in Japan. The largest model was only 20 inches, which is too small for a home theater experience by a long shot. At CES Toshiba revealed a larger LED-based LCD 3D TV, more than 50-inches diagonally, that was capable of autostereoscopic viewing. The unit shown was only an engineering sample and doesn’t represent exactly the look or size of the models that will be on the market, but Toshiba’s Scott Ramirez says Toshiba will be offering the… View this story

To this point most of the talk of 3D televisions have focused on a few specific brands of flat-panel television manufacturers and a growing number of projector companies. Very quietly this past fall one of the world's biggest electronics companies joined the ranks of 3D gear manufacturers when it released its new line of 3D flat-panel televisions. Toshiba's newly launched WX800 Cinema Series televisions are available in a choice of 46- and 55-inch screen sizes and aesthetically, the TVs measure less than 1.2-inches deep and they incorporate chrome accents that… View this story
