Sunfire Atmos Subwoofer
Grant Clauser | 05/03 09:45 AM, 0 Comments
To many people, the subwoofer distinguishes a home theater sound system from a set of speakers. Unfortunately, a lot of subwoofers are big ugly boxes that are hard to conceal. Sunfire’s new Atmos Subwoofer should help that problem. The Atmos Subwoofer uses dual 6.5-inch woofers in a sealed extruded aluminum enclosure. The drives are capable of excursions up to 1.8-inches. The entire unit is just a little more than 8-inch high, but Sunfire says the performance is superior to subs with 10- and 12-inch woofers. That power comes from the… View this story

Wireless subwoofers are all the rage these days, but Sunfire is taking a different approach with the new Wireless Subwoofer Kit, which allows users to add wireless capabilities to any powered subwoofer. As a longtime specialist in subwoofers, why wouldn’t Sunfire - a member of Nortek's AVC Group - just ship a range of subs with wireless technology built in? Why make a kit? Mark Weisenberg, managing director for Sunfire says, “We did this because of two main reasons: flexibility for our customers who want to offer an easy upgrade… View this story

It’s been more than a year since Elan Home Systems, Niles and Xantech joined forces under one umbrella, The AVC Group, LLC, a division of Nortek's (OTCBB: NTKS) Home Technology Group. The three companies are finally formalizing a new structure of collaboration, starting with a consolidation of rep firms from 45 down to 15. We’ve seen some collaboration from the entities in the past, but it has been little more than a bunch of handshakes and a commitment to help each other. Today, The AVC (Audio Video Control) Group is… View this story

Sunfire has been awarded U.S. Patent #7,844,068 by the United States Patent Office for its StillBass Anti-Shake technology featured in the company’s ultra-thin SubRosa Subwoofer. In-wall subwoofers used to face a huge hurdle – the drywall would crumble and turn to dust from the constant mechanical vibration. While designing audio components for Sunfire, Bob Carver developed a solution by utilizing Newton’s Third Law of Motion, using an actuator that moves in opposition to the woofer to virtually eliminate destructive and intrusive mechanical vibration that subwoofers naturally produce. By controlling the… View this story

Sunfire has built a dealer following through the popularity of its reasonably priced electronics and small footprint powered subwoofers. Augmenting to the room friendly nature of its own subwoofers, as well as subwoofers from other manufacturers, the company has recently introduced its Universal Wireless Subwoofer Kit. Sunfire says the kit contains the SDSWITX Wireless Transmitter and the SDSWIRX Wireless Receiver and the products are designed to allow installers to place a subwoofer near electrical outlets up to 25 feet away from an audio source. The company also says that a… View this story

Moving strategically to strengthen the long-term R&D and product development programs for its Elan, Niles, Xantech, Sunfire, and Aton brands, The AVC Group announced the appointment of Jim Hardiman to the position of vice president of engineering, effective January 3, 2011. Hardiman will report directly to Mark Terry, president of The AVC Group, and will be based at the company’s Carlsbad, California corporate headquarters. “Jim Hardiman brings more than 35 years of proven innovation and standards-setting thinking to his new position at The AVC Group,” Terry says. “A world-renowned technologist,… View this story

Robert Archer | 10/27 03:30 AM,
Years ago the electronics company Sunfire was at the forefront of the compact subwoofer trend, which allowed custom installers to integrate subwoofers capable of producing healthy amounts of volume without taking up large chunks of floor space. The company's latest line of subwoofers continues the company's design philosophy. The new Sunfire Dynamic Series (SDS) of subwoofers feature 8-, 10- and 12-inch subwoofer models and the company says they can be used when installers need a small sized subwoofer that's capable of high outputs. Sunfire says the new subwoofers incorporate the… View this story

Sunfire is the latest manufacturer to drop its media server, following Escient, Axonix (morphed to something else) and much earlier Xperinet. The company is phasing out the Theater Grand Media Server (TGM-100) introduced last year at a retal price of about $6,000. Why bother with it, really, since sister company Elan will offer a media management solution with the forthcoming G control system. Besides, the media server was a strange fit for Sunfire, whose strength is in subwoofers, speakers and related electronics. “With the release of Elan’s new G system,… View this story

Sunfire TGM-100 Server
Robert Archer | 02/08 09:15 AM, 1 Comment
The electronics and computer industries are merging and products like Sunfire's Theater Grand Media Server (TGM) line are becoming increasingly important. The servers join Sunfire's existing lines of amplifiers, preamplifier/processors, subwoofers and A/V receivers to round out the product platform. Sunfire sent me its TGM-100 server ($5,920) and a TGM-HD1 ($580) external hard drive. The TGM is pretty much a standard size A/V component. Its front panel is simple with just a slot-loaded DVD/CD player opening and an on/off button. The server's rear panel features a choice of analog audio… View this story
