Philips is planning to take 3D to the next step - or at least the next room. Jan. 2011 was quite a month in the world of universal remote controls. Both Philips and Universal Electronics Inc. (UEI) announced that they were respectfully discontinuing their Pronto and Nevo univeral remote product lines. Philips Pronto, the Philips division that used to make higher-end remote controls, is gone for good. Philips announced last year that it was closing the division, but CE Pro learned afterward that efforts for a rescue efforts were afoot and almost certainly guaranteed. Alas, the would-be acquirers were unable to close the deal with Philips. We learned recently that it was a group of three European distributors who had tried to resurrect Philips. Less than one month after Philips pronounced the end of its Pronto remote controls busniess, the company has shipped samples of its first in-wall touchscreen, the TSW9500. Pilote Films, a major Pronto distributor in France, received its shipment today. The demise of Philips Pronto may have been exaggerated. CE Pro has learned that Philips may sell its remote-control division after all, even after announcing last week that it would simply close the Belgium-based business. Evidently, Philips received so much interest in the product since the announcement of its demise, that the company is now entering discussions with suitors. Philips says it is shutting down its Pronto remote control product line. The company has been trying to find a buyer for the Pronto business since 2009 and was unsuccessful.
