Consumer electronics professionals generally recommend hard wiring for the best audio, video, voice and data (AVDD) delivery. But sometimes you simply can’t get the wire to all the right places. Thankfully, today we have many technologies that deliver an excellent AVDD experience with no new wires required, including both wireless and “softwired” (powerline, coax) solutions. They include: WirelessHD (WiHD) – SiBeam (acquired by Silicon Image)Wireless Home Digital Interface (WHDI) – AmimonIEEE 802.11n (WiFi)Ultra-wideband (UWB)/WiMedia Wireless Gigabit (WiGig)Wireless Display (WiDi) – IntelMultimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) (coax cable)HomePlug (powerlines) So how…

If you’re not sold on powerline and RF for wire-free audio/video, then you might take another look at the lowly coax cable. The Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) has announced the next-generation 2.0 specification, featuring two performance modes with minimum throughputs of 400 and 800 Mbps (700 Mbps and 1.4 Gbps PHY rates). Founded in 2004 by Comcast, EchoStar, Panasonic, Motorola, Toshiba and others, MoCA was established at a time when little else existed for high-throughput distribution with quality of service (QoS). At the time, MoCA was working towards a…

MoCA and Verizon need some help gaining traction for whole-house A/V distribution over existing coax cables. The Multimedia over Coax Alliance is a group that espouses sending audio, video and data signals over existing coaxial cable in homes. The biggest backer of the technology has been Verizon, which converts most of its fiber-optic FiOS subscribers to MoCA once the signals get inside the home. It’s a quick and easy installation that requires little work for the installation crew. Back at EHX Fall 2008, Verizon had already come to the conclusion…
