People apparently weren’t all that mad at Netflix for raising its prices last year. The Convergence Consulting Group (via Entertainment Weekly) reports that about one million people dropped cable and satellite services in 2011 and turned to Netflix, Hulu and iTunes for their content. The report says 2.7 million U.S subscribers have said goodbye to cable and satellite services over the past three years. However, a million of those were just in 2011. The CCG says that 900,000 more will follow this year. Of course, that’s just a drop in… View this story

Super Bowl XLVI between the New England Patriots and New York Giants, which takes place Sunday, Feb. 5 2012 at 6:30 p.m. (ET), is going to set a record as the most-watched program in television history, according to Media Life's annual pre-Super Bowl poll. It will be the third straight year that the Super Bowl has set that record. Experts are saying the Super Bowl will draw 113-plus viewers, which would break last year's mark by more than two million viewers. There are a lot of football fans in this… View this story

Which streaming video service offers the best quality audio? Which has the most movies with subtitles? Which has the richest parental controls? Our friend (and neighbor) Gabe Gagliano at Tech of the Hub created an incredible chart comparing these and other features of the major premium video services: Amazon Instant and Prime, Hulu Plus, iTunes, Netflix and Vudu. [continues] Click for the full chart He offers some excellent analysis to go with the chart, including these notable updates since the last update in Q3: Other notable changes since the August-September… View this story

TV junkies just got another way to get their programming fill - Hulu Plus has just launched on TiVo Premiere. The move helps keep Hulu competitive in the streaming media world as Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Instant Video and Blockbuster are already available to TiVo Premiere subscribers. TiVo Premiere subscribers will need a separate Hulu Plus subscription ($7.99 per month) to access the content. However, TiVo and Hulu are offering six months of free Hulu Plus service to new TiVo Premiere DVR subscriptions, giving people a chance to get hooked. Special… View this story

I can still remember seeing my first “home automation” system 20 years ago at the International Security Conference. It was from security panel maker Digital Security Control (DSC), now part of Tyco. The product wasn’t getting too much attention back in 1990 for various reasons, but I recall how clunky it was to have to move menu to menu to control HVAC, lighting, security and other subsystems, especially since it was hardkey-based with a tiny black-and-white LED scrolling readout. It kind of reminds me of navigating streaming media content today.… View this story

That giant sucking sound you hear is Google TV pulling out of the Consumer Electronics Show. Apparently, Google has asked Sony, Toshiba, LG, Sharp and possibly other partners to delay the introduction of new TVs incorporating the new Web TV platform. The New York Times reports that Google “caught some of the manufacturers off guard” with the late-hour request: “Google as a company is not a particularly partner-friendly or partner-focused company,” said James L. McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester, who added that because of the delay, it might take another… View this story

What’s the difference between Hulu, Netflix, Google TV and all of the other streaming content services now flooding the market, and how can you get them? HD Guru Gary Merson provides a handy overview of the most popular online music and movie services, and links them to the connected TVs that provide them. Merson only glosses over Hulu Plus, CinemaNow, Blockbuster on Demand, Netflix, YouTube, Vudu, as well as some music services (Pandora, Rhapsody) and popular apps (Skype, Flickr). So you won’t use this pocket guide to select your services.… View this story

Remember this editorial I wrote last year? In the piece, titled “Be the Content Pro,” I suggested integrators qualify their customers not by the products they desire but by the content they enjoy. If a family is passionate about professional baseball, for example, sell and install a system that gets them easy access to games, stats and fantasy leagues. If they’re nuts about the Food Network, build a solution that streams their cooking shows when and where they want it. After that 2009 editorial, maybe one or two dealers responded… View this story

How often can Netflix revolutionize movie watching? We thought the rent-by-mail with no late fees was cool. So was being able to stream to your Blu-ray player and gaming console. Now it appears you’ll be able to marry your brand spanking new iPad with Netflix for a movie-viewing love fest on the portable device’s 9.7-inch screen. The free Netflix iPad app was released on April 1 and doesn’t appear to be an April Fool’s joke. It appears to have some pretty nifty features to basically mimic your experience of the… View this story

Just a few hours after Hillcrest Labs released its Kylo Web browser for the TV, Hulu appears to have pulled its content from the app. We reported earlier about the new service, which lets users browse the Web from the couch, using a TV-friendly browser that lets users zoom, pan, and perform other functions using any common USB HID device. As we mentioned previously, Kylo's home page directs users to the main Web site of several streaming services such as Hulu and Netflix. It does not take you to some… View this story
