Are Integrators Putting the ‘Gesture’ in GUI Design?

When it comes to graphical user interfaces (GUIs), there’s a new “G” in town: gesture. As we noted in our Top 5 Home Technologies for 2012, touchscreen control is being supplanted (or at least complemented) by gesture-based control – just swipe the air to change a channel or lower the window shades, for example. Last week, Microsoft posted a job listing for a Senior Motion Design Lead to “shape the next generation of television and entertainment experiences” via the company’s Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB) division. A dealer who keeps an…

What Water Dispensers and Home Automation Have in Common

For GUI geeks like myself, there’s nothing like browsing a good GUI site just for grins. I did just that after receiving a press release (below) from RocketGUI, which creates designs mostly for AMX control systems but also offers its own Home Pilot automation system. Home Pilot essentially uses inexpensive Global Caché IP adapters/Web servers as the controllers, and iPads and other iOS devices as the interfaces. The company says it supports most of the popular CE subsystems such as Russound, Lutron and Kaleidescape, plus a variety of inexpensive streaming…

Guifx Releases Victoria UI Kit for Mobile G iPad App
Julie Jacobson | 07/30 07:10 AM,

Guifx, one of the original third-party interface developers for Crestron, AMX and other control systems, has released its first solution for Crestron’s Mobile G iPad app. The new Victoria User Interface Kit, which is also compatible with Crestron’s full line of touchscreens (other vendors coming soon), shakes up a few interface paradigms. First, Guifx shuns floor-plan navigation in favor of a room grid layout, with icons representing each room or zone. This design allows for a more “organized method of selecting and receiving feedback from rooms,” according to the company.…

It all started when GUI designer Guifx was asked to create an interface for a refrigerator. The request came from an embedded hardware partner, Amulet Technologies, that wanted to demonstrate the app for Embedded World 2010 in Germany. Guifx head honcho Morgan Strauss says in his blog, “In addition to normal dispensing operations, the dynamic nature of touchscreens provided the opportunity to get creative and add features such as automatically displaying the volume of water as it’s being dispensed.” Guifx is a spin-off of Audio Advisors (now Ask the Advisors),…

"About a month ago I helped a guy with some freebie GUI work," says Burks. "And when I refused payment and suggested he donate money to the Susan G. Komen Foundation instead,…
