Nintendo recently said it's planning to announce a new Wii later in 2011. So when it comes to the original console, it seems like everything must go. The gaming manufacturer just unveiled plans for a new $149.99 Wii package, which includes the original console in either black (pictured) or white, along with the Mario Kart Wii game and a matching Wii Wheel accessory. The add-ons will replace the previously offered Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort games. The new package will be available at retailers starting May 15. If you…

Nintendo has announced it will be replacing the Wii with a new gaming system in 2012. The new system is set to be unveiled at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles from June 7-9. In total, 86 million Wii units have been sold. The system ranks third among gaming systems sold by CE pros, behind Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox. The system seems to have lost steam vs. Microsoft Kinect, which one integrator says will be a game-changer for his business. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo incorporates…

The Wii Effect: Are You Selling ‘Just in Case’ Products?
Julie Jacobson | 10/20 09:47 AM,

There’s no stopping the gaming juggernaut this holiday season. In Q4 2009, sales of video game consoles and related products rose 5.5%. This year during the same period, we should see a 14.4% rise, according to Shawn DuBravac, chief economist for the Consumer Electronics Association. Speaking at CEA’s Industry Forum in San Francisco, DuBravac referred to a “Wii effect,” in which non-gamers purchased the popular Nintendo gaming system “just in case, because you never know when you need a Wii.” God forbid, the holiday party fizzles. DuBravac says, “You could…

Starting today, PS3 owners can stream Netflix without having to load in a disc. Now, Nintendo has announced that U.S. and Canadian Wii users can also enjoy disc-less Netflix access. “At this time of year, consumers have a near-insatiable demand for family entertainment,” says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “And this simplified Netflix access will help bring families together more quickly, more easily and in more ways than ever before. More than 3 million Wii systems have already connected to Netflix, demonstrating how easy the service is to set…

Why Gaming is a Win-Win
Deborah Smith | 07/01 07:32 AM,

Most integrators have shied away from gaming because low margins hardly make it worth the effort. No one in this industry will get rich from selling gaming consoles, but gaming is, for many individuals and families, a primary motivation for buying a bigger TV and stepped-up, higher-margin sound system. I am not suggesting anyone actually sell gaming consoles. But all integrators - both with and without showrooms - should start including the gaming experience into their sales presentations. It opens the door to a discussion about multiple theater systems, 3D…

With as many home theater enthusiasts who use the PS3 as a Blu-ray player, I can only imagine how many are itching to get their hands on some 3D content, whether it’s a movie or video game. Sony on Thursday announced there are now four 3D games available for download. The 3D games are WipEout HD, Super Stardust HD, PAIN, and a free demo of MotoStorm: Pacific Rift. 10 Video Games We Want in 3D There are caveats, however. Obviously, you’ll need a 3D-capable HDTV and compatible glasses. And while…

Wipeout HD for PS3 will be upgraded for 3D playback June 10, says Sony Japan. We’ve been hearing about several games that will be updated for 3D playback on Sony’s PlayStation 3, which is planned to receive a 3D firmware upgrade this summer. But without a firm release date, we haven’t been sure when we’d be picking up our 3D glasses along with our Dual Shock 3. Fortunately, that’s about to change in short order. Related: 10 Video Games We Want in 3D According to Sony Japan, updates for Wipeout…

Retro 3D Gaming: Remembering Rad Racer
Arlen Schweiger | 06/02 07:35 AM,

I spent too many hours of my youth in front of the TV playing the original Nintendo gaming console, so many of those games and graphics are etched in my mind. With all of the talk of 3D entertainment these days, especially the potential of 3D gaming, I couldn’t help but pay homage to a 3D game that was a big part of my NES experience more than 20 years ago - Rad Racer. The company that produced the game, Square, had offered another such game, 3-D WorldRunner, but I…

10 Video Games We Want in 3D
Matt Whitlock | 06/01 06:32 AM,

When it comes to 3D and video games, there are two schools of thought - those who believe 3D will make games better than sliced bread dipped in chocolate and set on a bed of gummy worms, and those who think it will destroy video gaming and possibly the world along with it. I'd like to believe there's a middle ground. While I don't believe 3D will make every game concept light years better, I do believe the extra dimension 3D technologies offer has the potential to open up new…
