D&M Holdings has gone though an extreme makeover with a new name, logo and tagline, and a slate of new products under its brands Boston Acoustics, Denon and Marantz. The new name is D+M Group. The new tagline is "Performance is Everything." The new logo has a "dimensional D" to signify the company's video products, and the "M" is now a series of sound waves that all meet at the end. "This is our way to symbolically tell everyone in the organization that things are changing for the positive," says…

Audio Shake-Up: Dawkins Departs Thiel; Passaro Leaves McIntosh
Julie Jacobson | 11/18 10:11 AM,
1 Comment
Two heavy-hitters in the high-end audio market are leaving the business. Ken Dawkins, VP North American Sales for Thiel Audio, is leaving the company after more than 11 years. Thiel is a maker of high-end loudspeakers and audio components. While Dawkins put 11 years into Thiel, Linda Passaro spent only 17 months as global sales and marketing VP at McIntosh, maker of high-end audio gear. Amid several reorganizations, McIntosh and parent company D&M Holdings have seen several high-level departures in the past year. Former D&M president Bob Weissburg and former…

Julie Jacobson | 09/02 09:39 AM,

D&M Holdings has gone through more organizational changes in the past couple of years than any other CE manufacturer, it seems. Now Phil Cohn, former SVP sales and marketing, is leaving the company. The departure comes just one month after the resignation of Bob Weissburg, former president of D&M Holdings Sales & Marketing. Stephen Baker, a 27-year D&M veteran who once served as president of Denon USA, left the company in April. He just announced he was joining relative newcomer Olive Media, developer of high-performance digital audio servers. Meanwhile, Kevin…

It’s been a rough couple of months for independent A/V reps. Now CE Pro has learned from several sources that D&M subsidiary McIntosh Labs is issuing pink slips to most of its reps. Roughly five [update: exactly eight ] existing reps will continue with the line of high-end audio components, while the others will be replaced by factory-direct representation, sources say. McIntosh isn’t alone. Just this week, speaker manufacturer TruAudio announced it was terminating all of its independent reps except for one, following news that Nortek's AVC Group (Elan, Niles…

Home Tech History: M&As by Nortek, Legrand, Duchossois, D&M
Julie Jacobson | 01/14 12:36 PM,

Over the years, Audiovox (Nasdaq: VOXX) has expressed an interest in the custom electronics channel, and it has been widely speculated that they would make acquisitions in the space. During CES 2011, the CE accessories giant announced its intention to buy Klipsch in an effort to bring higher margin brands to the Audiovox family. We expect Klipsch to be just the beginning for Audiovox in the custom home electronics market, following in the path of Nortek, Legrand, Duchossois and D&M. All of those organizations have acquired home technology companies over…

Gunning for the Custom Market: Is Audiovox the Next Nortek?
Julie Jacobson | 01/14 12:35 PM,

Audiovox (Nasdaq: VOXX), a company best known for buying distressed brands in the accessories business, is straying from its roots with the planned acquisition of Klipsch Group Inc. The company announced on January 6 that it had signed a non-binding term sheet to purchase all of the shares of Klipsch, subject to a number of contingencies. It’s an unusual move for Audiovox, whose core business revolves around such technologically low-brow products as Terk antennas, Energizer batteries, Acoustic Research boom boxes, RCA gadgets, Code Alarm car security products and Surface Clean…
