The days of calling Circuit City a defunct big-box "store" might be coming to an end. Systemax, which purchased the Circuit City brand in May 2009 and relaunched the company online, is "contemplating a brick-and-mortar rebirth," according to Dow Jones Newswires. Systemax bought and revived CompUSA, one of many failed electronics retailers, and now plans to open stores in Houston, Chicago and other major markets after successfully testing stores in Florida. There currently are 34 CompUSA stores. Could Circuit City follow the same plan? "Recession hurts, but it also creates… View this story

Much has been made about hhgregg’s ambition to win over Circuit City’s former customers by opening stores in the defunct retailer’s most lucrative markets. But it also seems to be filling gaps that have been left since Tweeter went out of business. “When a window opens, we take advantage," CEO Dennis May said recently. “Circuit City’s demise no doubt is a big part of that opportunity.” After announcing a net sales increase of 20.3 percent for Q3 ended Dec. 31, 2009 — a quarter in which it opened 10 stores… View this story

Ever since Circuit City closed in early 2009, electronics retailers have been trying to nibble at its market share. All that biting has taken a toll on U.S. No. 1 electronics retailer Best Buy, according to a survey by Retrevo. Best Buy announced solid performance for the fiscal month of December ended January 2, 2010 — 13 percent overall growth and 8.2 percent comparable store sales increase. Retrevo’s survey, however, shows a shift in consumer perception that threatens to shrink Best Buy’s market share. The beneficiaries appear to be Amazon… View this story

The Tweeter brand is up for grabs. The Canton, Mass.-based specialty electronics retailer that once had nearly 200 locations across the U.S. shut its doors in Dec. 2008. However, it's possible that its brand soon will be back from the dead. Atlanta-based liquidator Apto Solutions is accepting bids for Tweeter's intellectual property, including its name and URLs, according to Christopher Re, VP of business development for Apto. All bids are due by Nov. 30, 2009, says Re, who is handling the bidding process. "Then a deposit is due Dec. 7… View this story

Don't underestimate the value of being bookmarked. Consumers are still shopping at CircuitCity.com, despite the long-time retailer having liquidated its remaining 567 stores in early 2009. Systemax scooped up Circuit City’s brand and URL in May 2009 for $14 million. Systemax, which also owns TigerDirect.com and CompUSA.com, released its Q3 2009 earnings, saying those three sites contributed to the company’s “strong performance in the consumer channel.” Chairman and CEO Richard Leeds, says the three sites combined put Systemax “in the top five in terms of traffic and market share in… View this story
