Is it Fair to Favor Women in Federal Contracts?

We wrote recently about a federal mandate that requires 5% of government prime- and subcontracts go to small businesses run by women. The “problem” with the current Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Federal Contract program, apparently, is that it is too restrictive. In order to invoke the money set aside for this program, the contracting officer at a government agency has to have a reasonable expectation that two or more WOSBs will submit offers for the job. Do Women Seriously Want CE for Valentine’s Day?

Touting its new report on gender and technology, the Consumer Electronics Association proclaims, “Tip for Valentine’s Day: Women Want Electronics.” I’m skeptical. Isn’t that like the National Fishing Association declaring, “Women want lures for Valentine’s Day”? In the CEA’s new study, “Women and CE,” the organization finds eight in 10 women “expressing an interest” in CE products, with 41% of those saying they are “very interested” in CE. The ad for this new subwoofer from Bang & Olufsen reads: Superior Bass Performance For Dad A tulip for Mom A tulip for Mom? You’re sticking with that? I can see a bunch of Dads buying this funny-looking BeoLab 11 subwoofer with the pretense of giving flowers to their wives. Can you hear it now? "Honey, look what I bought you. B&O says you're going to love the tulip-shaped design and the fact that it 'compliments any décor.' Maybe it will "compliment" the decor by saying it loves the dogs…
