Samsung, Sharp, Hitachi, Epson and three other makers of LCDs have agreed to pay more than $553 million to settle price-fixing claims on TVs, notebook computers and monitors, according to Reuters. According to the article, the settlement (Case: TFT-LCD (Flat Panel) Antitrust Litigation, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 07-md-01827) is based upon lawsuits that claimed the manufacturers conspired to inflate prices and stifle competition between 1999 and 2006. The agreement concludes a five-year investigation by authorities from Japan, Korea, the European Union and the United States. The… View this story

We keep talking about premium features saving the display market, bringing high prices to dealers and joy to consumers. That wasn’t the case in 2009, however. DisplaySearch reports that 2009 LCD TV average selling prices (ASP) fell twice as fast as they did in 2008 -- about 24% year-over-year. Plasma displays did not fare much better. ASP for last year fell 21%. DisplaySearch attributes the price erosion to a massive glut in Q4 ’08 and Q1 2009. Meanwhile, lower prices attracted more customers, so unit demand for flat panels in… View this story

With the weather and the economy simultaneously warming up, there are more opportunities for installers to offer outdoor A/V systems. SunBrite's 55-inch Model 5510HD All-Weather outdoor LCD is a 1080p, 120Hz refresh rate HDTV that installers can use for outdoor A/V applications when the client was a video solution for their patio, deck and poolside areas. The company says the television's 4,000:1 contrast ratio and high brightness enables it to reproduce video images in a high light environment, while its corrosion-resistant, powder-coated aluminum housing protects the television from the elements. You often hear custom electronics professionals opining about how there is no central voice promoting the value of better products and expert installation. To the public, the custom electronics industry has no face. Well, the industry may have found that face. And a good one. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has signed a three-year endorsement deal with Vizio. The popular LCD TV manufacturer made the announcement at CES 2010 days after revealing plans to launch a custom LCD line that will be exclusively available to custom and specialty dealers. It stands to reason… View this story

Looks like the battle for the thinnest TV at CES 2010 is already underway. LG Display has unveiled a 42-inch 1080p panel that's just 2.6mm (.1 inch) thin, which LG says makes it the "world's thinnest" LCD TV. The prototype LED-backlit display weighs less than 8.8 pounds and offers a 120Hz refresh rate. LG will be showcasing this thin display and other "cutting-edge" display technologies in a private room at the Bellagio Hotel during CES. At CES 2009, LG unveiled the LH95 LED-backlit LCD, which it said at the time… View this story

Consumer interest in residential energy conservation has been on the rise since Energy Star-qualified desktop PCs and monitors became available over 15 years ago. Consumers are well aware of the Energy Star logo when seeking out a new major appliance, heating or air conditioning system, flat-panel LCD TV, or just replacing their light bulbs. Newly built homes can also receive the Energy Star qualification if they meet specific criteria. But apart from flat-panel TVs, consumers may not be fully aware of the opportunities for energy conservation in audio/video systems for… View this story

Two Dallas Cowboy fan gets the best of both worlds with their uber-high-tech private suite in the new Cowboys Stadium. With the California Energy Commission banning the sale of inefficient TVs starting in 2011, we thought we'd take a look at some of the top "green" TVs on the market. LCDs typically require much less power than plasmas, which have seen Pioneer and Vizio drop the technology within the past year. LCDs are becoming more and more efficient, thanks to full backlighting by energy-friendly LEDs and features like: Local dimmingAmbient light sensingAuto-off settingsHome viewing modesTV efficiencies will get even better. DisplaySearch forecasts that "large area" LED backlights will surpass conventional… View this story
