CEDIA Expo Eliminates Showfloor Sunday
Tom LeBlanc | 10/29 08:28 AM,

Good news for CEDIA Expo attendees/pro football fans: CEDIA says it has eliminated Sundays from the Expo schedule and scaled back to a three-day exhibition format. The change kicks in at CEDIA Expo 2011, which returns to Indianapolis, Ind. Sept. 8-10 — that’s Thursday through Saturday for those keeping score. The move reflects a pattern of CEDIA listening to Expo attendee’s concerns and reacting to them. After hearing negative feedback about Atlanta, host of CEDIA Expo 2009 and 2010, it cut its planned stay short and shifted the 2011 show…

CEDIA Expo 2010 Attendance Reflects ‘Modest Growth’
Tom LeBlanc | 09/26 12:36 PM,

CEDIA says attendance at CEDIA Expo 2010 in Atlanta was 20,700, which is similar to the reported 20,000-plus that attended the 2009 show in Atlanta. CEDIA says attendance “held steady with modest growth.” The organization adds that the 453 exhibitors at the 2010 show mark a 6 percent increase over 2009 and points out that 20 percent of the attendees were first-timers. CEDIA Expo 2009’s attendance was down 12 percent; the 2008 show in Denver was down 14 percent with 25,000 attending. Speculating on attendance was a hot show floor…

Kef’s Flat Panel Speakers Are 35mm Deep
Tom LeBlanc | 09/26 04:28 AM,

If people want flat-panel TVs, they must want flat on-wall speakers, too, Kef figures. At CEDIA Expo 2010, Kef introduced its T Series, “one of the world’s thinnest high-performance home theater and flat panel audio systems.” Kef’s Johan Coorg said that within their 35mm deep cabinets the speakers boast an ultra-low profile bass and midrange driver plus a fully-vented tweeter. The lack of depth, he said, doesn’t come at the expense of audiophile sound — he then played a demo that backed up his claim. The T Series flat panel…

CEDIA Keynote: Get High-Volt License or Be Left Behind
Jason Knott | 09/25 08:19 AM,
11 Comments
There was good news and bad news from the CEDIA Expo 2010 keynote entitled “The Future of Energy Management.” The good news: The opportunities for integrators to make money offering energy management systems is ready to explode as utilities across the nation continue to switch to smart metering systems. The bad news: If you don’t have an electrician’s license or at minimum a very strong partnership with an electrician, the opportunities are much more limited. For example, utilities across the nation are using subcontract electricians to switch out mechanical meters…

When Free Trade Shows aren’t Free Anymore: CES, EHX, CEDIA
Julie Jacobson | 12/09 10:44 AM,

CES 2010 will cost you $100 this year if you missed the Oct. 7 early registration. After January 2, 2010, you'll pay $200 to walk the floor and attend the keynotes. Maybe that will teach you to pay attention to early bird specials for trade shows. For the first time, the Electronic House Expo (EHX) also will be charging CE pros for attending the event, even if you're just there to walk the show floor. I'm sure a lot of dealers will kick and scream about it, but welcome to…

CEDIA Reacts After Complaints About Atlanta
Tom LeBlanc | 12/02 10:00 AM,
14 Comments
You’ve got to hand it to CEDIA. Apparently, it took to heart the overwhelmingly negative reaction to Atlanta as the host city of CEDIA Expo 2009. CEDIA announced that CEDIA Expo 2010 will still be in Atlanta, but it’s opting out of its 2011 Atlanta plans. The 2011 and 2012 shows will return to CEDIA’s hometown of Indianapolis. This is despite CEDIA’s original plan for Dallas to host the Expo from 2012 to 2014. Don Gilpin, CEDIA executive director, says those plans were never written in stone and it hasn’t…

CEDIA Expo Moves Back to Indianapolis for 2011-2012
Steve Crowe | 12/02 07:59 AM,
8 Comments
After one more year in Atlanta, CEDIA Expo will move back to Indianapolis for 2011-2012. The Custom Electronics Design & Installation Association, which is based in Indianapolis, held the annual tradeshow in Indianapolis from 1999-2001 and again from 2003-2005. CEDIA originally planned to move the Expo to Dallas for 2012–2014. But CEDIA was just "penciled in" for Dallas and was never contractually obligated, according to Don Gilpin, CEDIA executive director. Gilpin did not rule out moving CEDIA Expo to Dallas in the future. The Indiana Convention Center has added more…

Lutron Demos Kirbe Motorized Shade System
Arlen Schweiger | 11/16 09:04 AM,

As a custom installer, one of the product categories you really need to show potential clients is lighting control. The wow factor comes through in demos, and the light bulb, so to speak, will go off in the customer's head. Part of that category includes motorized window treatments and shades, which are definitely more exciting to see in motion than hear about. Lutron Electronics recently had a chance to wow dealers at an event in New York City's New Museum. Lutron was unveiling its Kirbe system that debuted at CEDIA…

Q&A: MCIA President Kevin Collins
Geoffrey Oldmixon | 11/11 07:52 AM,
0 Comments
The non-profit Media Center Integrator Alliance (MCIA) recently celebrated its first birthday. In one year, the MCIA has had to shift gears a number of times, accommodating an economy it didn't expect to be quite so rocky. MCIA president Kevin Collins reflected on that tough first 365 days. With one year under your belt, how do you feel about MCIA's progress? Last year, we formed before we had an inkling of this economic downturn. We had three major premises when we formed: General awarenessTrainingToolsWe came out with objectives, and we…
