Adding to its line of HDMI signal distribution products, the Erlanger, Kentucky-based company TV One has introduced its new IT-CT-633 HDMI Repeater to the market. The IT-CT-633 HDMI Repeater expands the company's IT-CT-630 line of HDMI Extender products and it can be used to increase the transmission distance of HDMI as far as 250 feet (76 meters) for 8-bit 1080p signals and 98 feet (30 meters) for 12-bit 1080p signals. I can remember the first time I heard about a Cat 5 extender given the name “balun” - I couldn’t help but chuckle at the use, because baluns serve an entirely different purpose. I thought that it would get corrected, but I was wrong. Baluns have been around for many moons, and the word actually came to be as an abbreviation “BAL-UN.” It was a short way of saying “Balanced to Unbalanced,” and was used just in the radio frequency and audio frequency arenas as transformers. Passive in design, these… View this story

Digital signage is projected to be a $14 billion market by 2017. But unless things change, not many CE pros will benefit from that enormous growth. Traditional CE pros - A/V guys - aren’t embracing digital signage as aggressively as their IT brethren. A category that once seemed right up CE pros’ alley appears to be passing them by. There may be good reason for that. Not every integrator is equipped to provided the coordinated system design effort needed to pull together digital signage hardware, software and content. There’s also… View this story

Integrators can greatly affect the energy usage of both their residential and commercial clients. By looking at the typical energy usage in commercial facilities vs. residences, integrators can better hone their sales pitches specifically for lighting control, shade control and networking thermostats by calculating ROI. Residential ROI Calculations Taking a look at these pie charts from the U.S. Department of Energy, the biggest chunk of electrical consumption in the average U.S. home is devoted to heating and cooling systems at 43 percent. That figure represents a strong opportunity for dealers… View this story

The cloud is one of the Top 5 Technology Trends to Watch in 2012, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. No big surprise there. Even so, it was interesting to hear from CEA chief economist Shawn Dubravac and CNET senior writer Roger Cheng, who discussed the subject during this week’s CEA Industry Forum in San Diego. Dubravac pointed out that we’ve seen cloud-based services expand over the last decade for things like email and banking. “Those are core consumer activities that consumers now for several years have been doing online,”… View this story

Lumber. Conduit. Nails. Shingles. Miles of wire. These are the kind of things I think of when I hear the word “contractor.” Integrators have miles of wire, too, along with numerous other little parts and pieces needed to make all the big pieces of a project work together. But integrators have something traditional contractors don’t, and it makes up about 95 percent of the cost of goods and materials on a project: Inventory. The big stuff. The job-specific components that most integration companies bring in only after the client has… View this story

New In-Stat research forecasts HDMI-enabled mobile PC shipments will surpass 300 million units in 2014, from mobile PCs to HD camcorders to digital still cameras. The study confirms a trend that was prevalent at CEDIA Expo 2011 with mobile source devices. The trend is worrisome to CE pros who still derive much of their income from equipment markup. “HDMI has made significant strides in mobile PCs over the past three years, since it has two big advantages in this market," says Brian O’Rourke, research director. “Its small size is a… View this story

Tuesday was the big day—or at least the latest big day in the many that Apple has had over the years. The company announced the latest iPhone, but it wasn’t the 5 like everyone expected. Instead, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the iPhone 4S. Don’t expect that extra S to stand for “savings.” Despite a familiar design, Cook says that the “inside is all new,” meaning some significant enhancements over the current iPhone 4. First up, the new iPhone 4S will come packing an A5 chip and dual-core graphics. That… View this story
