The Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA) last week announced its volunteer board of directors for 2013. The selections were made, according to CEDIA, in an effort to align the skills sets of the leadership with the initiatives set forth in the organization’s recently adopted Strategic Plan. “Each nominee completed a detailed questionnaire and went through a series of interviews designed to assess their respective competence and experience in the skill areas required to support’s CEDIA strategic initiatives. This process allowed us to form a strong slate of candidates… View this story

In advance of his CEDIA course at ISE 2013, “Ultra High Definition, 4K Video, Compatibility and HDMI System Design,” instructor James Chen of Kordz shares some important considerations about TV feature sets, bandwidth and HDMI cables. Details about the course follow. 1. Don’t mistake bigger for better Every major electronics manufacturer launched their newest and best 4K devices at the recent CES 2013. Ultra HD is upon us and the images were indeed amazing but have we thought about the transport methods to get such high data rates to so… View this story

Integrators who like to whine and moan about CEDIA —our most revered trade association—not doing enough about this or that, maybe you need a little refresher on what the organization provides. They don’t just produce trade shows and court builders and architects; they negotiate with vendors to bring discounted services to your business. The association has created a snappy little video that tells a good story in just 1 minute and 29 seconds. For example, CEDIA reminds us about discounts for Sprint and Verizon Wireless, responding to a request from… View this story

Wisdom Audio Insight Speakers
Arlen Schweiger | 11/15 10:32 AM, 1 Comment
We’ve been documenting the audio category’s big return as a thriving market recently, as more and more integrators provide anecdotal evidence of homeowners’ quest for higher-quality sound solutions. One category that may get overlooked these days with the new-construction market still down is architectural loudspeakers. In-walls and in-ceilings were all the rage when integrators were outfitting new homes left and right, but today it’s more about retrofitting rooms that tend to lean on freestanding speaker solutions. However, there’s no denying that homeowners’ tech priorities still involve three crucial elements: value,… View this story

We constantly receive stories of CE Pro dealers and vendors giving back to the community, and we never quite know what to do with them. Then it dawned on us to celebrate these acts of kindness in a special issue of CE Pro. This December marks the first annual CE Pro Charity Issue, where we highlight our industry’s charitable contributions. For example, Guardian Protection Services created the GuardianKIDS I.D. Program to spread awareness of child safety, and provide tools for parents to help keep their children safe. In addition, the… View this story

Quite a few CEDIA Expo attendees spoke of some shift in exhibitors’ strategies this year. A large part of the trend seemed to be bringing commercial solutions to the show floor. If residential integrators want to make a successful switch to commercial, they have some work to do. Here are some stepping stones that might just help integrators cross the river from residential to commercial without getting their socks soaked in the process. Don’t Believe the Hype Many of the products on the show floor were line extensions of traditional… View this story

The Future Tech Pavilion at CEDIA Expo 2012 probably had the longest lines and entailed the most preparation of any destination at CEDIA Expo, with its actors and carefully staged choreography. There were long lines throughout the show for the 20-minute presentation. But there were a few other exhibitors at CEDIA that were notable because of the creative ways they demonstrated products. Here are my three favorites. Khimo Lego House I'm not entirely sure what Khimo does. Something about a secure cloud-based solution for remotely accessing and controlling AMX and… View this story

With all of the discrete electronics incorporated into today's generation of electronics cooling can be an issue as companies try to conserve space while emphasizing industrial design. The St.Louis-based company Lowell Manufacturing is helping electronics professionals to deal with these cooling issues to enable them to install long lasting and reliable residential and commercial electronics systems. During the recently completed 2012 CEDIA Expo the company introduced its universal fan panels and the company says these new 2U and 3U products are available with a choice of fan options, as well… View this story

As CEDIA Expo 2012 came to an end, I decided to prepare a short round-up of what I saw as new and exciting to our industry. There were so many products shown this year, it’s hard to focus on only a few; I managed narrow it down to just these six. 1. Savant SmartView Tiling software This new SmartView video-tiling application from Savant Systems was so exciting for me, CE Pro gave it its own story. You can read about it here. 2. Universal Remote Control’s DMS-AV Receiver with Home… View this story

We've all been told since childhood, never stare at the sun. Heck, Bruce Springsteen famously wrote about it on his debut album (well, made more famous when Manfred Mann covered it), singing "Mama always told me not to look into the sights of the sun," on "Blinded by the Light" to kick off Greetings From Asbury Park. Of course, he then added, "Oh but mama that's where the fun is" ... and that seems to be the take on the sun-staring matter from display manufacturer SunBriteTV, too. Outdoor televisions face… View this story
