Somfy Touts Simpler, Smarter Shading with Native PoE Motors and Open Integration Strategy

Somfy’s motorized shades with built-in Power over Ethernet cut costs and complexity by combining power and control over a single cable.

In a recent interview, Executive Editor Zachary Comeau spoke with Karthick Kanagalingam, Architectural Specifications Manager at Somfy, about the evolution and benefits of Power over Ethernet (PoE) in motorized shading systems.

A Simplified, Scalable Alternative

Kanagalingam explained that Somfy’s PoE shading solutions integrate power and control over a single CAT6 cable, eliminating the need for high-voltage wiring, separate gateways, and complex infrastructure. The technology offers a more cost-effective, energy-efficient, and installer-friendly option than traditional high-voltage or low-voltage approaches, especially in projects where electrical costs would otherwise be a deterrent to automation.

Somfy has further innovated by embedding PoE technology directly into the motor, allowing it to operate as a true IP device on the network. This reduces hardware costs and streamlines deployment.

Integration and Commissioning

Somfy’s native PoE motors are compatible with top automation systems including Control4, Crestron, URC, RTI, Q-SYS, and others via the Synergy API. These integrations are backed by detailed guides and validated drivers, making setup easier for dealers.

PoE also improves commissioning: users can set shade limits, group shades, and adjust speeds using intuitive software. For large projects with multiple identical shades, configuration can be cloned from one motor to many—saving time and ensuring consistency.

Integrator Feedback and Training

Early feedback from integrators has been positive. They appreciate the reduced reliance on third-party hubs and bridges, which often introduce complexity and compatibility issues. Somfy’s system allows full control within a networked architecture, with multiple torque options to suit various window sizes and loads.

To showcase the simplicity of programming its PoE motors, Somfy will host a live competition at CEDIA Expo 2025 in Denver, where integrators can compete for prizes by programming dual shades in the fastest time.

Final Takeaway

Kanagalingam emphasized Somfy’s long-standing reputation for innovation, with a commitment to openness, choice, and integration flexibility. With PoE shading, Somfy is reducing the friction that often keeps projects manual and helping the industry embrace more accessible automation.
