Why should integrators work with theater designers vs. attempting it on their own: The private cinema is likely the most technical, detailed, and challenging room in any residence. A state-of-the-art private cinema, even one dedicated to movies alone, represents many disciplines. Design and construction trades alone encompasses architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, interior, lighting and more.
What are the biggest mistakes you see integrators make when doing their own theater designs: Mistake is a strong word, but there is a lot of value in recognizing your core competency and focusing resources and efforts on excelling at that. A private cinema design firm for example requires a much different business model than an integration firm.
What is the key to great dedicated theater design: Collaboration is key. We work with the most talented architects, designers, system integrators and other trades in the world by facilitating great collaboration we’re able to leverage the talents and skills of the team and this yields extraordinary results.
The ability to both zoom in and zoom out. The details matter as well as the overall holistic design. Every element of a private cinema design impacts the others so we must iterate through a design by focusing in on every detail then zooming out to ensure the design is holistically approached and extraordinary in all facets.
Thoughts on microLED trend vs. projection in theaters: There is no disputing the image resolution, light output, dynamic range and contrast capabilities of microLED displays. There are other advantages as well. There is also no disputing their popularity as we are involved in many implementations. What is of concern is what effect this technology will have on the artform of film and music as it is experienced in private cinemas. As George Lucas has famously said, “sound and music are 50% of the entertainment in a movie.” Screen wall sound is the most important for cinema as well as music.
How has immersive audio impacted modern home theaters: Immersive audio has been an incredible catalyst to our ability to deliver extraordinary and transportive experiences. The added realism and impact of artfully produced immersive soundtrack in a private cinema environment enhances the suspension of disbelief. Immersive audio has been a favorite feature of every Paradise Theater for the past six or seven years.
