Ring Introduces Smart Video Search

Published: October 9, 2024

Ring has announced the launch of Smart Video Search, a new AI feature that simplifies the Ring search experience by enabling customers to easily search through their Ring video to find key moments.

Here are more details:

  • Simple and Fast Searches: The new Ring Smart Video Search makes it quick and easy to find key moments and even uncover surprising ones, giving customers a better sense of what’s happening in or around their home or business. For example, searching “raccoon in the backyard last night” might show video of raccoons knocking over a customer’s trashcan, while searching for “red bicycle in the driveway” might turn up endearing videos of their oldest child teaching their youngest how to ride a bike.
  • Visual Language Modeling (VLM): The company points out that its Smart Video Search uses Visual Language Modeling (VLM) to match text to images, and quickly deliver search results. Instead of manually scrolling through Ring video footage to find something, customers can now type queries directly into their Ring app to search for specific footage captured by their Ring video doorbell or camera and watch the video playback.
  • Search for a Range of Activity and Things: Ring also points out that it built Smart Video Search because we know video history is very important to Ring customers. Prior to Smart Video Search Ring notes, customers could only filter through categories of events, like motion or Live View, or People, Package and Doorbell Rings, to find specific footage. Now customers can search for actions like running and jumping. In addition to activity, they’ll be able to search for animals, locations, packages, people, time, vehicles, and weather.
  • Availability: Smart Video Search works with all Ring video doorbells and cameras and is available in public beta starting today. On November 5, 2024, Ring will launch a revamped subscription service called Ring Home, and Smart Video Search—along with other new features like 24/7 Recording—will be available in beta for Ring Home Premium subscribers.
