HDMI 2.2 at CEDIA Expo/CIX 2025: What Integrators Need to Know

The new HDMI format, which was announced earlier this year supports formats such as 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz.

Earlier this year the HDMI Forum, Inc., announced the release of Version 2.2 of the HDMI Specification to mark what the group says is a new era in AV connectivity.

The format follows the HDMI 2.1 format with HDMI 2.2 being said to offer higher 96Gbps bandwidth capabilities and next-gen HDMI Fixed Rate Link technology to provide improved audio and video for a wide range of device applications.

Some of the new HDMI 2.2’s specifications include support for higher resolutions and refresh rates including up to 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz. The new format also provides more high-quality options including uncompressed full chroma formats such as 8K at 60Hz/4:4:4 chroma sub-sampling and 4K at 240Hz 4:4:4 chroma subsampling at 10-bit and 12-bit color.

In an effort to help promote the new HDMI 2.2 format, the HDMI Forum Inc., is advocating for the use of the term Ultra96. The forum points out this term indicates a product supports a maximum of 64Gbps, 80Gbps or 96Gbps bandwidth in compliance with the HDMI 2.2 Specification. The HDMI Forum emphasizes that products that market or display the Ultra96 feature name require the Ultra96 HDMI Cable to ensure a product’s maximum bandwidth is properly supported. The new Ultra96 HDMI Cable supports up to 96Gbps and all HDMI 2.2 applications.

Taking some time to elaborate on how the new format will impact the smart home industry, Brad Bramy, senior marketing director, HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc., tells CE Pro that when examining the new 2.2 specification, dealers should consider the possibilities the format provides rather than simply looking at numbers such as resolutions.
