Sonos has rolled out a major software update for its Ace headphones, introducing many of the initially promised for the Ace nearly a year after its launch. The Ace is Sonos’ first ever entry into the headphones category and according to CE Pro Senior Editor Bob Archer, a triumph in terms of performance.
The update is available now at no cost to existing owners and includes new features, such as TrueCinema mode, which is designed to replicate the experience of listening to a surround sound system while still using headphones. The caveat is users will need a Sonos soundbar to use it.
The soundbar will scan the room while the headphones, after processing the data, will adjust the sound to make it seem like it’s happening all around a user’s head in its own form of room calibration.
Sonos has also updated the Ace to allow users to swap TV audio to multiple Ace headphones, allowing for private audio in situations where the usual experience of a big, bumping sound system isn’t preferred, such as late-night viewing in an open gathering space, or just smaller spatial capabilities.
Lastly, the update is throwing in smarter active noise cancellation that changes based on how they’re sitting on the user’s head. What this means it if hair, glasses or hats alter the way the headphones seal around the ears, the Ace will accommodate.
Sonos came into 2025 with a rough start following a high-profile backlash to its app updates that resulted in the departure of both its CEO and CPO. Despite this, the company has stated that it remains focused on improving the user experience across its app.
The new update for the Ace headphones is available now and free to all Ace owners. No soundbar is needed to download the update, though users will need one to leverage the new spatial sound feature.
