Nest thermostats look like such tempting treats, sitting on store shelves in their pretty boxes beckoning consumers to just “Try me.” But the smart-home company is urging consumers to hire a Nest Pro for their installations.
In an online video, we see hip hop artist Rev Run Simmons (Run DMC) totally exasperated by his inability to control the temperature and save energy in what we can imagine is a very large home. His installer Matt from ARS Rescue Rooter saves the day.
“We called the Nest Pro because we have an issue,” says the (real-life) reverend. “We have thermostats all over the house, and we can't control the children. Sometimes in the summer they have the heat on, and sometimes in the winter they have the air conditioning on.”
A very animated Rev Run asks the decidedly unanimated installer if he'll be able to talk to the thermostat, “and just like 'Nest, do this.'”
Matt musters a yes, while the Rev's wife Justine shakes her head incredulously.
The Rev wants to know if he can go like, “Yo, Google, talk to Nest, and tell Nest to do this.”
Justine just keeps going, “No, no,” like you couldn't possibly do such a thing.
The Rev wants to know, for reals, if Matt's any good at this because, well, he looks like a buff model with nice hair, not anything like an HVAC guy.
It's worth sticking around to see some cool artwork in the Simmons' home (1:50 mark in video below), plus a bowling alley, indoor basketball court and home theater hidden behind some hinged shelves (view the slideshow.)
We think Matt probably could've upsold Rev Run to Nest classic thermostats instead of the economical E series, but whatevs.
The video ends with Justine trying to control Nest through some pretty deft rapping, but to no avail. The Rev wins the day with, “And like my friend Doug E. Fresh and Rap the Rulah, OK, Google, make it coolah.”
So it's a little cheesy, but it's nice to see Nest promoting its Nest Pro program. If only all DIY “partners” in the channel would do the same. Of course, promoting professional installation is good for Nest, which can provide a better user experience when products are serviced by pros.
