The Society for Information Display (SID) has announced an update to its highly popular Information Display Measurements Standard (IDMS). The update, called IDMS v1.3, is being released by SID’s International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM) and will be available before the end of May 2025. IDMS v1.3 contains over 900 pages of display measurement methods and tutorials, expanding on the original IDMS v1.03 that was first published in 2012 with updates in 2021 and 2023.
“Display technology continues to advance rapidly” says John Kymissis, president, Society of Information Display. “The new IDMS v1.3 will enable measurement and characterization of displays that utilize the latest technology. The International Committee for Display Metrology is an important part of SID, chartered under SID’s Definitions and Standards Committee,” he continued. “As IDMS is the world’s most popular guide for making display measurements, SID is proud to have supported the team of dedicated volunteers who have made publication of IDMS v1.3 possible. On behalf of the SID Executive Board, we offer congratulations and appreciation to ICDM for this achievement.”
New Society for Information Display content in v1.3 includes extensive new material on setting up a camera and other imaging light devices, including moiré reduction techniques, a new section on using concentric ring images for measuring Michelson contrast on near-eye-displays, and information on temperature stabilization for HDR displays. The chapter on Color for Display Metrology has updated content on uniform color spaces, color difference equations, gamut rings explanations, and light measuring device considerations. There is also new code available that supports gamut ring analysis for reflective displays and new material for the bidirectional scatter distribution function from the point-spread function in the tutorial section of the IDMS.
“The ICDM is committed to update the IDMS to keep pace with display industry advances,” adds Mike Wilson, chair, ICDM. “Experts from across the display field have made significant efforts to augment the previous release of IDMS, v1.2, with IDMS v1.3. IDMS remains the go-to guide for display measurement and characterization, and v1.3 contains the latest methodology. We are grateful to the international team of volunteers from across industry, academia, and government who have created and updated this critically important guide to display metrology.”
