The Catalyst AV distribution network (specialty AV solutions, serving CEDIA channel) member-company HCA Distributing (Rocky Mountains territory) has opened a branch in Salt Lake City. This represents the second location for Denver-based HCA. HCA Principal Ron Perron points out there is significant new home building occurring within the region and it is helping to drive local custom installation sales.

The Catalyst AV network is currently comprised of 11-member (individually owned) companies.

SnapAV, a Charlotte-based manufacturer for the residential and commercial channels, recently held a grand opening for its new office in Taipei, Taiwan. The new office will facilitate relationships with SnapAV’s overseas vendors and will serve as an extension of its engineering, quality, and product development departments.

“We’re thrilled to open this new location,” notes David Moore, vice president of engineering for SnapAV. “In previous trips to Asia, I would travel for days to visit with vendors all over the place. Our new office will help us to be more efficient and focused in our vendor relations so we can place a greater emphasis on creating higher-quality, more innovative products.”

The grand opening reception took place at the new office in the Manhattan district of Taipei. In attendance were SnapAV’s new Taipei team, led by Jerry Hsaio, vice president of Asia operations, as well as several Charlotte employees, including Moore and company CEO, Craig Craze. The team also celebrated with several vendor partners that were in attendance. “We’re dedicated to strengthening our relationships with our partners and are excited to work even closer with them,” adds Moore.

N.Y.-based DSG Distributors has hired Steve Stenzi to serve as its newest inside sales and support specialist.

The company states Stenzi has more than three decades of experience in the A/V and security categories, and prior to his hiring it worked with him for approximately 20 years in various roles.

The ProSource buying group has announced that New York City retailer B&H has joined, effective November 1 2014. B&H becomes the 17th member of the PRO level dealer group within ProSource.

The Home Technology Specialists of America (HTSA) has announced Leon Shaw, owner of North Carolina-based Audio Advice, and current vice president of the HTSA board of directors, has been selected to fulfill the role as 2015 president.

Shaw originally started Audio Advice in 1978 and over the years the company has developed into one of the top custom installation firms in the country. With 2014 drawing to a close, Shaw says he is ready to accept the challenge of leading the buying group into the new year. "It's been a pleasure serving as a member of the HTSA board of directors; I am looking forward to continuing to serve as president at the start of 2015," he says. "HTSA is comprised of true talent, knowledge and experience; together as an organization we are helping to increase awareness for home technology as well as empowering the skilled professionals who make up this network. I'm eager to see what this next year will bring."

Custom loudspeaker manufacturer Triad Speakers, Inc. announced the appointment of the NuTech Group as its new independent sales representative in the mid-Atlantic region. Based in Pennsylvania and Virginia, NuTech is a 25-year-old company that specializes in the custom installation and custom retail channels.

THIEL Audio has announced the addition of Dennis Crosson as director of engineering and Gavin Bence, audio engineer, as THIEL expands the scope and capability of its engineering department.

Crosson's previous industry experience includes time with respected brands such as PSB, JBL and Klipsch before joining THIEL, and Bence has a degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University and has experience as an engineering intern for Indy Audio Labs and Koss.

Platinum Tools, a Newbury Park, Calif.-based manufacturer of hand termination and cable and wiring testing products has relocated to a larger facility. Effective immediately, Platinum Tools’ new address is 2450 Turquoise Circle, Newbury Park, CA 91320. The company adds that its phone, fax, and email addresses remain the same.

Headphone maker SMS Audio has hired Steve Jain as VP sales. Jain comes to the company from Core Brands, where he served as director of sales for a year. Prior to that, he was director of sales for DEI Holdings, national sales manager for D&M Holdings and GM strategic business for JVC.

Control4 has announced that James Caudill has joined its board of directors. Caudill currently serves as the chairman and chief executive officer of D&M Holdings, Inc., which manages a portfolio of companies that manufacture audio, video and home theater equipment, including the Denon, Marantz and Boston Acoustics brands.

Prior to being named as the chairman and chief executive officer of D&M Holdings, Caudill served as president of the hardware and home improvement group at Black & Decker Corporation.

The Audio Engineering Society (AES) has named Andres Mayo as its next president. Mayo takes over the leadership of AES from Dr. Sean Olive, and he currently serves as owner and senior mastering engineer at Andres Mayo Mastering and Audio Post in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Grammy award winning producer and engineer is set to guide the AES into the coming year and through AES138 in Warsaw, Poland and the convention’s return to New York City for AES139 in the fall of 2015.

Allnet Distributing, a member of the Catalyst AV Network, announced the opening of its Troy, Mich., distribution facility. This announcement represents the second location for the company, which is headquartered in Elk Grove Village, Ill., and Allnet says 6,000-square foot facility will display and stock products from companies that include SONOS, Sony, Yamaha, Definitive Technology, Lutron, Luxul, URC, Bose, Nest, Dropcam, EnGenius, Atlona, TiVo, IC Realtime, Vivitek, Vanco, Rapid Racks and Mounts, and Catalyst Wire & Cable.
Audeze, a manufacturer of planar magnetic headphones, announced that long-time music and lifestyle industry veteran Kurt Soto has been named the company’s new marketing director. In this role Soto oversees all aspects of marketing, including advertising and communications, lifestyle marketing and in-store environments.

Soto joins Audeze after 29 years with the clothing company Vans where he rose from teenager working in retail, to overseeing Vans’ global music lifestyle programs that included working with artists ranging from Pharrell Williams and Public Enemy, to Metallica.

AVAD LLC, a North American provider of custom electronics, hosted a grand opening of its new 22,000-square foot Houston branch on Oct. 8. The grand-opening event included the unveiling of the branch's newly designed showroom, limited-time promotions and other exclusive benefits for area integrators. Manufacturers such as Bose, Current Audio, InFocus, MartinLogan, Middle Atlantic, Klein Tools, SurgeX and others were in attendance, and AVAD points out that a Screen Innovations (SI) 133-inch curved Black Diamond screen is on the premises for video demonstrations.

Elite Prime Vision, the dedicated custom installation division of Elite Screens Inc. has announced the addition of Brenda Rocha as process manager. Control4 (NASDAQ: CTRL) is continuing to grow its global sales team, which the company says it has already increased by nearly 20 percent over the past year. Most recently, it appointed two additional regional sales managers: Kim Parker, an 18-year industry veteran returned from Savant Systems to serve as director of sales – West; and Larry Bennett, an industry veteran with over nine years at Control4 was promoted to director of sales - East. Meanwhile, Kevin Garretson and Ernie Coulter continue in their roles as director of sales - Central and South respectively.
Bill Herz has joined Faroudja Enterprises as its new chief operating officer and vice president of business development. Faroudja Enterprises is a start-up company that opened its doors in 2013 with the purpose of developing intellectual property to improve video compression quality. Herz has 25 years of industry experience, and he was previously with AMD.

Industry veteran Jeff Myatt has left Russound (again) to serve as marketing manager for Control Resources, Inc., a provider of custom-designed and off-the-shelf microprocessor and analog power control solutions. Myatt was marketing director and product manager for Russound over the last two years. His first seven-year stint with the company started in 2003 in product management and training. He has also served as a product manager for Boston Acoustics.

Cell phone signal booster maker Wilson Electronics, LLC has hired Lonnie Arima, who joins the company as vice president of sales and marketing, reporting to Robert Van Buskirk, president and CEO. Arima most recently served as the vice president of channel sales & marketing at HERE, a division of Nokia that handles mapping and location, where he was over development of channel sales in the Americas. Some of his key customers included Best Buy, Amazon, Costco and Verizon. He has previously held senior sales and marketing roles at Western Digital Corporation, Iomega Corporation, and Apple.

Longtime custom A/V retailer Joseph Louis Brown II "Brownie", 87, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 14, 2014. Brown was the founder of Home Entertainment Inc. that eventually grew to have 10 locations in Houston and Dallas. His exploits included a stint as a geologist before founding his own record store called "Disc Count House" in Houston. He later founded Home Entertainment Inc. in 1957. Brown sold the company in 1999. In addition, he also founded Industrial Audio Video, Inc. an affiliate of Home Entertainment in 1971. An avid golfer and fisherman, Brown was known for his integrity, dignity and generosity. He served as a business mentor to many.

He is survived by his wife Marie Brown, daughters Erin Brown and Julie McMahon, son in law Kevin McMahon, of Houston, as well as five grandchildren: Joe, Gwyneth, David, Lillian and Genevieve McMahon who adored him and loved spending time with their grandfather. They will miss him dearly. He is preceded in death by his son, Joseph Louis Brown, III (Louis).

Clare Controls, a manufacturer of home automation solutions has announced the addition of Aldo Filippelli as national sales manager. In his new position Filippelli will work closely with Brian Dietsch, Clare’s vice president of business development to build and support comprehensive sales operations across all U.S. territories.
TIDAL, a high-fidelity music streaming service with HD music videos and curated editorial, has announced the appointment of David Solomon as its national sales and marketing manager. Working across the U.S., Solomon will be responsible for the promotion of the TIDAL service, working with manufacturers and retailers on co-marketing opportunities and being its representative at events nationwide.

Christie Digital has hired George Walter as its new director of home entertainment in North America. Walter most recently served as vice president of home cinema for Digital Projection, where he launched and managed the company’s home cinema initiative for over 14 years.
Custom Plus Distributing and sister company independent manufacturers rep firm Oliver Marketing have announced the appointment of Lou Judd as director of sales. Judd will oversee the company's four warehouse locations in Seattle, Portland, San Jose and Sacramento. Custom Plus Distributing is one of 11 members of the Catalyst AV distributor network that serves the residential and commercial A/V electronics markets.

The DaVinci Group announces the addition of industry veteran John Turchintz to its sales force as regional sales manager. Turchintz brings more than 15 years of industry experience that includes AVAD, Jarmac Group and most recently as the General Manager of Sound & Vision, the A/V Division for Crane Appliance.

In other news, the company has named two new rep firms for its TDG Audio, TDG Design Studio, Vanguard Dynamics and Blue Aura wireless products. Cinema di Cuore will cover the Southern California area, while CSP Marketing will cover Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Da-Lite has announced several territory updates in the company’s Pro AV Sales Team.

Geoff Gibbs joins the Da-Lite sales team from Intuit where he most recently worked in sales. Gibbs will be based in Virginia and he will be responsible for all sales, training, consultant and architect activities in Virginia, Delaware and Maryland.
Andrew Packer has been promoted to sales consultant for the Pro AV team. Packer has been with Da-Lite for six years in various roles including inside sales, shipping and manufacturing. Parker's new duties include training, consultant and architect activities in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Derek McClusky has been promoted to simulation and visualization sales manager, and will be based in Florida. Lee Andrews has been promoted to sales manager for the Southern region, and will be based in North Carolina.

Motorized mount and lift manufacturer Future Automation has appointed George Gavutis to the position of Business Development Manager (North America). Gavutis, formerly with NuVo, will oversee national sales for the Custom Installation and Pro AV/Commercial markets in North America for the UK-based company. He’ll focus on developing sales for Future Automation’s standard product lines by growing and maintaining our existing dealer network.

Kostas Reissis, director, USA integrator channels, Sonos, is celebrating his 10th anniversary with the wireless audio entertainment manufacturer. Reissis is a former Boston-based custom installer who was once profiled in CE Pro before joining what was then a new audio company.

Former Nortek (Nasdaq: NTK) CEO Richard Bready, is hosting a fundraiser for President Obama tonight at Seafair, his Newport, R.I., home. The Providence Journal reports that tickets for the event range from $15,000 to $32,000 and that about 60 people are expected to attend.

The Journal reports an aide says, besides Mr. Obama himself, expected speakers are Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi, DCCC Chairman Steve Israel, U.S. Representatives James Langevin and David Cicilline, Bready and Easton.

Among other guests will be U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, Rhode Island House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello, Rhode Island Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed, Newport Mayor Harry Winthrop and Central Falls Mayor James A. Diossa.

No word on whether Obama plans to visit Casterville, the Providence home of Kimberly Lancaster of the PR firm Caster Communications.

Origin Acoustics has appointed Linda van Zanten and her firm Vancouver, B.C.-based LVZ International to represent Origin internationally for all markets except for the U.S.

van Zanten has 17 years experience in international sales and marketing, representing such companies as SpeakerCraft, Sonance, Triad, TiO, Coastal Source, Soundcast and Key Digital. Origin founder Jeremy Burkhardt partnered with LVZ when he was leading SpeakerCraft.

Azione Unlimited (AU), the education and buying group for custom retailers and integrators, has just added its 95th dealer member. The last three to join are World Premiere of Mechanicsburg, Penn., Osbee of Harrison, N.Y. and Premier Media Technologies of Destin, Fla.

Rieger brings more than 18 years of product management experience to Clare with previous career stops at GE Security and ADT. Rieger's duties with Clare will be to assist in the growth and development of the company's product portfolio, which includes IP video surveillance, HD media distribution, and multiroom/surround audio amplification products.

Drab has nearly three decades of experience developing telecommunication and Internet products. Brian Wiser has been named president of sales – North America for Bosch Security Systems, Inc. In this position, he will lead the sales, support, training, customer service and marketing organizations in North America. Joining Bosch in August, Wiser will replace Jeremy Hockham, who will take on a new assignment for Bosch in Europe, effective October 1, 2014. In the interim, Wiser, Hockham and the Bosch management team will work together to ensure a smooth transition for customers.

Wiser joins Bosch with more than 25 years of channel sales and marketing experience. He most recently served as a senior vice president for specialty, direct and consumer markets in North America for technology distributor Ingram Micro Inc.

Vivint, Inc., a leading security home automation services provider based in Provo, Utah, has named Joe Albaugh chief security officer. Albaugh brings 20 years of experience to the role, including past positions as chief information security officer for three large, critical infrastructure agencies of the U.S. government. As chief security officer, Albaugh will direct the security strategy and initiatives across all areas of the company.

Before joining Vivint, Albaugh was the chief information security officer for the U.S. Department of Transportation, overseeing the information assurance and cyber security efforts within the department, including more than 440 information systems and 100,000 people. Prior to this role, Albaugh was the chief information security officer for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), where he helped redesign the organization’s cyber security program.

Projector screen manufacturer Screen Innovations (SI) is moving its Austin, Texas headquarters on August 15, 2014, to a new 73,000 square-foot-facility, tripling the size of its current location. Since Screen Innovations was founded in 2007, the company has experienced an annual compound growth of more than 40%, the company says. The new building, also located in Austin, Texas, will be home to research and development, manufacturing, sales and marketing, and warehouse operations as well as a new, state-of-the-art training center. It can also be expanded to over 100,000 square feet .

Daniel C. Locke, 62, owner of Key Security Systems in Newton, Kan., passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014. He is survived by his wife Ellen Ann, his brothers Duncan and Dwight, his sister Lura Flentie, and a granddaughter and two great grandchildren. Locke was active as an instructor in the Kansas alarm industry.

Locke worked for 25+ years in the security industry, sitting on numerous associations’ boards of directors, both locally and nationally. He helped craft association bylaws, fire codes, state statutes, false alarm ordinances, and other meaningful documents. "He did this, many times, to the detriment of his own company, putting the industry’s needs above his own,” says J. Jordan Brown of Guardtronic Alarms in Little Rock, Ark.

Brad Shipp, executive director of the National Electronic Security Alliance, adds, “I will miss Dan. He was one of the folks who committed lots of time and energy to the industry for long period of time. I think I first met him in 1991 and he had been at it for years at that point. He was always inquisitive and joyful and brought a unique perspective to things. He was always a small company and I know the efforts he put in meant long hours on his part to make up for the time he gave. He not only ran the local associations, but he trained hundreds of his competitors at years of training classes. He faced lots of challenges organizing things in Kansas, but he kept at it for over 20 years. There are not many with his dedication and perseverance around.”

The Wireless Speaker and Audio Association (WiSA ), an industry group with 30 members dedicated to bringing wireless, surround sound audio products to the home theater market, has announced the appointment of Thomas Lee as the new president. Lee replaces Jim Venable in this position. Lee has a wealth of consumer electronics experience that will help bring speaker and CE manufacturers together to provide advanced wireless audio products to the market. Lee’s resume includes over 30 years of executive management, administration, communications and marketing experience in the technology market sector. He has held management roles at Intel Corporation, Cirrus Logic, as well as several technology start-up companies, providing products to the high volume consumer products market.

“Promoting WiSA-compliant products and having the consumer and professional audio market adopt this high quality wireless technology is an exciting prospect,” says Lee. “My commitment is to bring together many key manufacturers to supply a wide-range of interoperable products at multiple price points across the wireless audio market.”
CSAA International, the voice for central station monitoring companies, announced that Steve Doyle, who has led the association for 22 years, will retire in October 2014.

“Steve Doyle has ably led our Association for the past two decades, taking on challenges in partnerships, technology, government relations and industry changes. John W. Litt, Christie Digital
John Litt has been named Control Room solutions manager, Central region, for Christie Digital Systems. In that role, according to his Linkedin profile, Litt will focus on the business development, account management, and system design for technical solutions involving the Control Room product line portfolio including video wall products, video projection systems, and video wall processors.

Previously, Litt spent four years as an account executive at Whitlock. Prior experience includes serving as general sales manager for the integration firm Wilshire Home Entertainment and director of home control products for Monster Inc. In addition, he owned his own integration firm for nearly 11 years.

Velodyne Acoustics, Inc. has announced a strategic reorganization, naming LiDAR director of manufacturing George Ross to the new post of general manager. Ross will oversee operations for the company’s LiDAR and Audio lines of business. Marta Hall, president of Velodyne, will focus on sales and marketing for the company’s audio division.
