Dolby Laboratories, Inc., and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) have collaborated to release several SPHE titles over the years. The companies' latest collaboration features Dolby's object-based Atmos surround sound format as part of SPHE’s first films to be released in the 4K Ultra HD disc format.
Dolby Atmos was developed to deliver an immersive audio experience that places and moves specific sounds anywhere in the room, including overhead to bring entertainment alive all around the audience.
“By adding Dolby Atmos to our home entertainment content, SPHE has the ability to offer audiences a rich, enveloping sound experience on both physical and digital formats, including the new 4K Ultra HD discs,” explains Man Jit Singh, president, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
The studio’s first films to be released in the new 4K Ultra HD disc format with Dolby Atmos include “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “Salt,” “Hancock,” “Chappie,” “Pineapple Express” and “The Smurfs 2” some time during the first quarter of 2016. Later, additional titles will be announced throughout 2016 and beyond according to the two entertainment companies.
“With Sony Pictures leading the expansion of 4K Ultra HD for home entertainment, Dolby is thrilled that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has selected Dolby Atmos to deliver a more-immersive next-generation audio experience to consumers, including SPHE’s initial slate of 4K Ultra HD discs,” states Curt Behlmer, senior vice president, content solutions and industry relations, Dolby Laboratories.
With more than 60 A/V receivers, 25 speaker products and a growing number of soundbars supporting the Dolby Atmos format, consumers have an increasing variety of options to enable them to listen to Dolby Atmos in their homes.
