The Z-Wave Alliance, a standards development organization focused on advancing smart home technology, has announced that Nabu Casa, the organization behind Home Assistant, has joined its Board of Directors. This move marks a significant step in the collaboration between the open-source smart home community and Z-Wave technology.
The Z-Wave Alliance, known for bringing together leaders in smart home and IoT, has recruited Nabu Casa to contribute to its member-driven initiatives. Nabu Casa joins a board that includes prominent companies such as ADT, Alarm.com, Amazon Ring, ASSA Abloy, Johnson Controls, and Vivint, among others.
“Z-Wave is an important part of the smart home, providing households with more choice in the selection of devices they can connect to,” said Paulus Schoutsen, founder of Home Assistant and Nabu Casa. He emphasized that the addition of Nabu Casa to the board signals Z-Wave’s commitment to integrating open-source solutions into its future plans.
Avi Rosenthal, Chairman of the Board for the Z-Wave Alliance, highlighted the importance of open-source collaboration in the evolution of smart home standards. “We are thrilled to have an illustrious member, and champion, of the open-source community join our ranks. By embracing and supporting open-source initiatives, we are not only enhancing the Z-Wave ecosystem but also reinforcing our commitment to an open, secure, and sustainable smart home environment for everyone.”
Currently, about 10% of households using Home Assistant have Z-Wave technology, accounting for approximately 1.7 million devices. Schoutsen noted that interest in Z-Wave continues to grow within the Home Assistant community.
This partnership between Nabu Casa and the Z-Wave Alliance could further strengthen the open-source approach to smart home technology, while promoting greater device interoperability and a more secure, user-centric smart home experience.
