Smart shading has quickly become a major focus in the connected home. According to CE Pro’s 2024 Shade Controls Deep Dive, the number of residential projects featuring motorized shades doubled compared to the previous year. It’s clear that this category is gaining traction fast, and CE Pro is once again turning to integrators to help map out where the market is heading next.

This year’s report will explore everything from project sizes and installation methods to vendor preferences, retrofit trends, and opportunities in light commercial markets. Last year’s findings revealed that the median number of shades per project reached 10, with an average total cost of $25,000 per job. That breaks down to about $2,500 per shade. The number of large-scale shading projects is also rising. Twenty-six percent of projects in 2023 topped $50,000, up from just 14 percent the year before.
Battery-powered shades are driving more retrofit opportunities. Only 2 percent of integrators said they don’t do any retrofit work, compared to 15 percent the year prior. Despite this progress, there is still a long way to go in commercial and resimercial settings. Eighty percent of respondents reported that shades were installed in just 0 to 10 percent of their commercial or mixed-use jobs.
