Is Home Health Tech Really Viable?
Jason Knott | 05/02 11:25 AM,

One of the roles of CE Pro is to introduce and advocate for new potential technologies to integrators. CEDIA plays a similar role as the industry’s primary organization. Long before they have become viable money-making product categories, we’ve written about things like shade control, smart thermostats, surveillance cameras, etc. We look at everything. Sometimes it ends up becoming a staple of many dealers’ businesses, sometimes it doesn’t. The home health care/aging-in-place technology category shows every possible indication of growth, but more and more I am becoming convinced that it is…

FCC Spectrum Reform Bill Creates False Alarm Nightmare
Jason Knott | 12/13 09:24 AM,

The current version of the FCC spectrum reform bill in the Jumpstarting Opportunity with Broadband Spectrum Act (JOBS Act) could create a false alarm nightmare and stain the security industry and overwhelm the nation's 9-1-1 system. Lou Fiore, chairman of the Alarm Industry Communications Committee (AICC), says there is "a major problem with the 9-1-1 implementation portion of the spectrum bill as adopted by the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology on December 1, 2011 regarding the sending of automatic signals to 911 centers." He says the…

The Future Technology Pavilion at CEDIA Expo 2011 showcased tons of cool technology: 244-inch screen wall, wireless power stations, underbed TV lift, dimmable windows, electric car charging station, etc. One of the technologies we've been forecasting for years as a huge opportunity is connected or digital home healthcare. The so-called "Silver Tsunami" is going to hit hard over the coming decade, and prepared CE pros can be at the forefront of helping out caregivers, nursing homes and relatives who will bear the burden of caring for a massive aging population.…

Why Digital Home Health Isn’t Selling
Jason Knott | 06/20 09:23 AM,
15 Comments
As the residential market continues to flatten and integrators seek out alternatives, why haven't more dealers looked into digital home healthcare? After taking a full-day Grand Care Systems training recently at Home Controls Inc., here are a few of my conclusions. The market is growing: There will be 70 million senior citizens by the year 2030, double the number from the year 2000. This one is even more mind boggling: there will be 1 million people over the age of 100 by the year 2050. Almost none of us will…

What do you do when you have an entire ecosystem of solutions for energy management, networking, security and digital health care solutions for homes, businesses and community-wide infrastructure? You build a whole new community. Panasonic and eight other companies are doing just that, spearheading the Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town (SST) in Japan. The smart town will feature widespread use of energy-saving devices and solutions that integrate energy creation, storage and management, Panasonic says. The 19-hectacre town will be built on the former site of a Panasonic plant and contain 1,000…

Standard Proposed for PERS Response
Jason Knott | 04/01 07:31 AM,

In yet another sign of how much more home health technology is moving into the realm of security, the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) has proposed the Personal Emergency Reporting System (PERS) central procedure standard (CS-PERS-01) for public comment. The standard calls for two attempts at verification, along with specific steps to be taken if the operator receives a busy signal or answering machine. The standard also outlines procedures for PERS-generated fire alarm signals. The standard goes on to note: Unlike other monitoring platforms, it is often advisable that monitoring…

How to Capitalize on Home Health Market
CE Pro Editors | 02/21 08:17 AM,
The nation's ability to rein in future healthcare costs, which hospital executives fear could reach unsustainable levels within a decade, may depend in part on emerging technologies that are taking patient engagement to a higher level, especially in the home. The population is aging and it’s far cheaper and more comfortable to let seniors age at home rather than move to an institution or extended care facility. To prepare CE pros for the onslaught of this new business opportunity, Home Health Tech education will be offered as part of the…

The Inside Scoop on 3 Emerging Technologies
Jessica Camerato | 02/04 11:27 AM,
1 Comment
Custom electronics technologies have evolved rapidly over the last few years. The emergence of new markets has created money-making opportunities, as well as uncertainty. How can I get involved? Is this merely a fad? Should I just stick with what I already know? “Technology is advancing at an accelerating pace, a pace that is counter-intuitive to human understanding, so we tend to get overwhelmed and fall back on the tried and true,” says Rich Green of Rich Green, Ink. “This approach will simply vaporize many existing home integration businesses. We've…
