Google to End Support for Early Nest Learning Thermostats

After more than a decade, Google is preparing to sunset support for some of its oldest Nest Learning Thermostats. Starting Oct. 25, the company will officially end software updates and smart control features for the first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats, including the 2014 European version.

While owners of these early model thermostats will still be able to adjust the temperature and settings manually on the device, connected features such as app control through the Nest or Google Home apps and voice commands via Google Assistant will stop working in October, the company says in a blog.

Google acknowledges that this is a big change for its early adopters and is offering significant discounts on newer devices:

  • U.S. users will get $130 off the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen).
  • Canadian users will get $160 off the same model.
  • European users will receive 50% off a Tado Smart Thermostat X Starter Kit, which is compatible with the Google Home ecosystem.

Why Google is Ending Support for Early Nest Learning Thermostats

According to Google, continuing to support the original hardware has become increasingly difficult as the company invests in more advanced features and smarter energy management tools.

The company is encouraging users to upgrade to the 4th-gen Nest Learning Thermostat, which it describes as its “smartest and most beautiful thermostat yet.” The thermostat was launched earlier this year and features a sleeker design with a larger display, AI-driven smart scheduling, Matter certification, and improved HVAC monitoring. It optimizes energy use based on user habits, weather conditions, and air quality, while supporting up to six temperature sensors for more precise control.

Importantly, all other Nest thermostat models, including the popular 3rd-gen Nest Learning Thermostat, the Nest Thermostat E, and the Nest Thermostat (2020,) are unaffected by these changes and will continue to receive updates, the company says.

Google Signals Shift in Nest Strategy in Europe

In Europe, Google is also signaling a shift in strategy due to what the company says are “challenging” hardware and software requirements of “unique” European HVAC systems.

Rather than launching new Nest thermostat hardware for that market, the company plans to support a broader range of smart energy devices built by other brands within the Google Home ecosystem. Existing Nest thermostats in Europe will remain supported while supplies last.

The company said it will continue to launch other new smart home devices in Europe, but not new Nest Thermostats.

Owners of affected thermostats will be contacted directly via email with more details about eligibility and how to redeem the upgrade offers.
