Today’s unique business environment has created an opportunity for integrators who previously may have classified themselves as either commercial or residential to service both markets.
“We are seeing a fair amount of crossover,” says Jeff Costello, vice president of sales for Nortek Control, speaking about the percentage of residential integration companies moving into commercial work. He says historically commercial market applications have been 10% to 15% of the company’s business, even though the company’s product lines have previously always been focused on residential applications.
“Pre-pandemic, we were seeing that percentage increase as more dealers are getting comfortable in commercial environments,” notes Costello.
According to Richard Pugnier, vice president of marketing for Nortek Control, Elan control systems provide an all-in-one solution for the resimercial space.
“For more than 30 years, Elan control solutions have been trusted throughout the world to bring together advanced control for audio, video, building access, security, climate, lighting, shades and all the rest – into one seamless system,” he says. “The Elan automation system is designed to be intuitive to install and configure in both residential and light commercial spaces. Elan products integrate seamlessly with best-in-class automation subsystems and enable complete personalization without programming, saving dealers time and money. This technology is ideal for a smart home system, and can easily be integrated into sports bars, conference rooms, classrooms and more to create places of transformative technology where everything is connected.”

Costello note that the technologies like the company’s IntelliVision facial recognition system built into Elan control panels is well suited for commercial applications. Nortek is also applying is analytics to its products to make them more intelligent and responsive.
He gives an example of a bar or restaurant that uses the Elan analytics to count the number of people in the facility. The system then automatically adjusts the volume of the multiroom audio system based on the number of people in the room. The higher the number of individuals, the higher the volume.
