Situated in Greenwich, Connecticut, the client of this private residence had originally reached out to Attilio Petroni and his team at NatLawn for his reputation in the landscape lighting category. Specifically, it was his ability to enhance the breadth of outdoor living spaces through circadian lighting design that had drawn the client’s attention.
According to Petroni, the client wanted to ensure that the fixtures would not evoke a melanopic response when one viewed the landscape lighting in the evening. This meant programming multiple different lighting fixtures with the same Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) as well as selectively placing the uplighting and moonlighting fixtures for the correct circadian responses.
“By controlling the landscape lighting through the Lutron experience combined with different WAC lighting fixtures with a vibrant high color rendering index, it allows me to illuminate objects and plant material in their true and natural color,” notes Petroni.
Working collaboratively with the builder, Petroni stated that the project still had a tight deadline that needed to be adhered to. Specifically, Petroni and his team had but a single week to tackle installing 150 WAC fixtures with 6 transformers across the residence. Fortunately, it only took the team four days to get the work done.
“I designed all the lighting myself which was challenging enough,” says Petroni. “I had to create unity and balance between different lighting scenes that would enhance the overall beauty of the landscape while taking into the account the architecture of the home.”

NatLawn Creates Fantastic Lighting Experience Around Human-Focused Design
“The number one highlight of the project was definitely uplighting the the façade of this estate,” he adds. “This is the showpiece when entering the property, so I wanted to create an emotional response with the installation.”
The pool area is also a close second, he says. Uplighting and moonlighting the different plant species found throughout the property, Petroni transforms the darkened space into a diverse showcase of the fauna found throughout.
Natural stone elements, such as those found in the border walls, the façade of the stone pillars adjacent to the patio, as well as the stone path leading to the pool, are also highlighted via landscape lighting.
“The goal for this lighting scene was to create a relaxing outdoor living environment,” Petroni concludes. “There was a sense of harmony between each individual living space with the pool as the main focal point of entertainment.”
