Earth Networks has announced it intends to spin off its sensing and software analytics company Whisker Labs to create two independent companies dedicated to energy data and the Internet of Things (IoT) for the home.
Earth Networks founder and CEO Robert Marshall will become CEO of Whisker Labs. Earth Networks president and COO Rich Spaulding, who has been with the company since 2004, has been promoted to CEO of Earth Networks.
Whisker Labs’ sensing and software analytics platform taps the electrical network to connect all appliances in a home, delivering real-time power usage data that is converted into appliance and home health performance and efficiency diagnostics.
“99 percent of appliances in the home are not connected, which means that homeowners exist in an information vacuum when it comes to knowing the health and well-being of theirappliances like refrigerators, dishwashers and washer/dryers,” says Marshall. “As an independent company, Whisker Labs will be more strongly positioned to bring to market innovative data, analysis and automation services that enable home intelligence for consumers, and tremendous value for our customers such as home platform, home services and energy providers who deliver these services.”
Earth Networks owns and operates a large proprietary network of weather sensors, including more than 10,000 exclusive weather stations which update with live data every two seconds.
The company boasts over 1,500 sensors in 90 countries measuring lightning globally as part of Earth Networks' Total Lightning Network. These networks power Earth Networks' range of weather data and software-as-a-service (SaaS) decision support, collaboration and visualization tools in order to help organizations automate weather-related decisions in real-time.
Whisker Labs became a standalone unit within Earth Networks in December 2016.
“The spin-off of Whisker Labs reaffirms Earth Networks’ ability to incubate and bring to market innovative high-value data solutions,” says Spaulding. “Our global points of presence provide real-time, hyperlocal insights and continue to drive a growing portfolio of data services to help commercial and governments organizations mitigate operational, financial and human risk on a daily basis across the world.”
