CEDIA is reporting strong revenues, a slight increase in membership and a full agenda of goals heading into 2018. Those were the key themes of the association's 45-minute “State of the Industry” webinar during which CEDIA’s executive team covered a range of topics, including revenues, membership, political endeavors, the state of new facilities, and tradeshow activities.
Participants in the event included Jenny Scott, director of member engagement; Dennis Erskine, board chairman and CEO at Erskine Group; Giles Sutton, board treasurer and managing director at James + Giles; Tabatha O’Connor, acting president and CEO; and Dave Pedigo, vice president, emerging technologies .
“We are not the same association as a year ago,” said Erskine, who elaborated on where CEDIA stands with its new Fishers, Ind., headquarters construction, noting the association plans to move into the $13.7 million, 40,000-square-foot building in November 2018.
CEDIA congratulated new board members Ken Erdmann of Erdmann Electric, Inc. Matt Scott of Omega Audio Video, and Heather Sidorowicz of Southtown AV, before presenting some hard group numbers.
CEDIA 2018 Objectives
CEDIA reports its 2016 consolidated revenues are more than $14.9 million. The association reports it derived more than 40 percent of its revenues from the CEDIA 2016 event, and another 35 percent from Integrated Systems Europe (ISE). Other international events, dues, education and other revenue sources also helped to contribute to the group’s income. The sale of the CEDIA 2017 event to Emerald Expositions occurred in early 2017, so that revenue is not reflected in the association's 2016 financial report.
CEDIA also reports global expenses of more than $14.7 million, with more than half of those expenses related to administration. The expo accounted for more than 20 percent of its expenses, and a number of smaller items accounted for the rest of the group’s spending.

During his part of the presentation Pedigo said 6,300 professionals participated in CEDIA’s in-person training sessions. He also commented the trainings were held in 11 countries, and just about another 4,000 integrators took part in its online training courses from more than 47 countries.
CEDIA also had a slight gain in membership in 2017. The group reports having 3,700 members, with nearly three quarters (72 percent) being integrators. That number is up from 2016, which ended with about 3,688 members.
Looking ahead, CEDIA will roll out its Members of Distinction badging program to help integrators stand out in a crowded marketplace. This initiative, according to Sutton, will be introduced sometime during the first quarter of 2018.
“As an integrator I’m interested in ways I stand out in the crowd. The ultimate goal is to reward those who strive for excellence,” remarked Sutton. “We are putting the final touches on this program and it will be introduced in the first quarter.”
ther areas of interest for CEDIA in 2018 include education, increased accessibility of tools, engagement with industry partners and workforce development.
The membership renewal date for 2018 is February 23, and the organization emphasizes that it plans to work on developing a deeper, more skilled workforce, which is a current pain point for members.
In addition to the membership renewal date, here are some other important CEDIA calendar items for integrators.
- Integrated Systems Europe: Feb. 6-9 in Amsterdam
- CEDIA Business Exchange: May 16-18, Phoenix, Ariz.
- 2018 CEDIA Expo: Sept. 4-8, San Diego
