As more homeowners discover the benefits of custom smart shades, integrators are under pressure to deliver across more projects. Scott Stephenson, director of product motorization at Hunter Douglas, asks, ‘How do you ensure you select the right shade manufacturer to take on the competitive, fast-diversifying category?’
First, seek a partner whose platform will not only perform well on its own, but also enhance any home automation ecosystem, advises Stephenson.
“The best solutions are simple to program, scalable to any project, and reliable in their performance, and offer an array of power options to accommodate the architectural requirements of new construction, retrofit projects and more.Â
“Second, consider if a brand offers customization options to meet client’s aesthetic or functional needs. Integrators have a unique opportunity to guide customers towards the perfect window treatments for their lifestyles and environment, while satisfying their design vision with precise personalization.,” he adds.
“Third, your shading partner should be just that: a partner. Smart shades present design and technical learning curves, so it’s important to select a manufacturer that provides the training and support you need to master the category and grow your business — from the initial startup to every project you land along your journey,” adds Stephenson.

Meanwhile, at CEDIA Expo 2022 in Dallas, the company gave a sneak preview of its new Aura Illuminated Shades. The shades, which will be available next year, have actual linear lights as part of the shade mechanism itself and produce light. There is a two-part reflective shade behind the decorative shade fabric to give the illusion of light streaming through the entire shade. The units are well suited for basement installations or other rooms without actual windows.
Lastly, Garrett Mueller, associate product manager, motorization, for Hunter Douglas, showed off the company’s new rechargeable battery solution for its motorized shades.
