Vinyl’s Continued Rise in Popularity
While vinyl saw a noteworthy resurgence in the early 2000s as a part of hipster culture, the market for vinyl has only continued to rise since then, despite fading into the background of 2010s and 2020s. A Vinyl Records Business Report 2024 estimates that sales soared to $1.5 billion in 2023 and vinyl sales are projected to hit $2.4 billion by 2030.
While nostalgia and aesthetics certainly play a factor in the revival of the format, analytics firm Camoin Associates also suggests that digital burnout has been a major factor fueling the vinyl renaissance.
“Some people have fallen out of love with the high-tech gadgets that are the hallmarks of our modern times,” the company states in its report on vinyl’s resurrection.
“They are opting to trade in their smartphones, digital streaming services, and Bluetooth stereos for lower-tech options like flip phones or (gasp!) landlines, film or fully manual digital cameras, portable personal CD and cassette players, and (you guessed it) record players.”
