Celebrating its 50th anniversary during CES 2019, Samsung opened the annual consumer electronics trade event by proving it is more than just a manufacturer of TVs and cell phones by laying out its Connected Living goals for the upcoming year.

Driving the global electronics company's Intelligence of Things is its investment into the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and 5G technologies, which will serve as the foundation for its smart home initiatives.

“2019 is Samsung Electronics' 50th Anniversary and for the last five decades, we've been committed to bringing meaningful innovations to consumers everywhere,” states HS Kim, president and CEO of consumer electronics division, Samsung Electronics.

“In 2019, we're taking things to the next level and leveraging our industry leadership to make our vision of Connected Living a reality.”

SmartThings Adoption Grows, 5G Patents

The company says its Connected Living ecosystem has grown significantly after the introduction of the SmartThings Cloud and its SmartThings app.

According to Samsung, the number of registered SmartThings users has grown 220 percent and app installs have increased by 61 percent. The company also says the number of SmartThings partners has grown by 44 percent.

Today, homeowners can utilize SmartThings enabled products from top companies including Amazon, Bose, Sylvania, and Plume

In terms of its 5G activities, Samsung claims that it is now the number one patent holder with the ETS (European Telecommunication Standards Institute) through its registration of more than 2,000 5G essential patents.

The company also says it is committing to AI technologies to help simplify the complexities of today's world.

Samsung Embraces AI

As part of its investments into AI, Samsung has established seven global AI centers, and it is adopting these technologies into its products and services. Its AI philosophy is built on the points of fairness, accountability, and transparency.

Through the introduction of its AI philosophy, Samsung states that it “is committed to ensuring the algorithms it builds are inclusive; the protection of user information and privacy are its top priorities, and it's easy for consumers to understand what the company does with its data and how it is handled.”
