This homeowner drives golf balls on famous courses and compares his swing to the pros’ nearly every day, thanks to a complete and creative basement remodel designed by Choose AV and Security, of Wichita, Kan.
“Not only was the ceiling height not tall enough to swing a golf club, but there was a structural beam spanning the entire room,” says Jamie Weidman, COO of Choose AV.
GLMV Architecture, also of Wichita, calculated the amount of space needed and builders excavated the concrete floor by three feet. The teams also replaced the header with a steel beam recessed into the ceiling. With construction done while the owners were at their second home, Choose AV gave them the means to keep an eye on the remodeling process remotely via a web camera.
Tee Times and Movie Times
Once structural alterations were made, the room measured 12 x 17 x 11 feet, and Choose AV was now able to install the high-end golf system featuring JC Video’s swing analysis software. There’s also an observation deck where spectators can enjoy a glass of wine from the custom-designed wine room while watching a 65-inch Panasonic TV or listening to music.
Just a few stairs up is the home’s main media space, which has a JVC DLA-X500R 4K projector featuring the company’s 4K e-shift3 processing and a 110-inch Screen Innovations Black Diamond motorized screen.

“The [tensioned] mounting system plays to the openness of the room, allowing more of the gorgeous stonework behind the screen to show,” says Weidman.
Control System in Full Swing
Even though this media room is in the basement, there are still windows, which Choose AV combatted with motorized blackout shades from QMotion. Complementing the video system is a 7.1-channel Definitive Technology Reference Series speaker system featuring Wave Launch technology, which creates the audio illusion that in-ceiling speakers are positioned in front of, not above, the viewers.
Preset scenes trigger multiple functions, but the homeowners also can operate all of the tech easily via the Control4 automation system and its various control devices including wall-mounted keypads, handheld remote or mobile device app.
This home was the silver winner of the Best Before & After category in the EH Home of the Year Awards from CE Pro’s sister publication, Electronic House.
