I’ve heard mixed opinions regarding building standards over the years, but the most level-headed takes I’ve heard interpret them as a nice set of guardrails. Want to do better but don’t have it in the project scope to go all the way? Just tackle what’s feasible and you’re already doing better than nothing. In that spirit, the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) just announced its ‘Works with WELL’ program.
Set up as a physical product line, the Works with WELL offering is meant to help manufacturers validate and showcase products that align with WELL building strategies. At the same time, it sets up a readily certified portfolio of design and technology products that designers, integrators architects can pull from when working on projects.
According to IWBI, the Works with Well program already has 40 companies pre-enrolled with over 1,000 products included. These products are situated around the feature requirements under the 10 WELL concepts: Air, Water, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Mind, Nourishment, Materials and Community.
Products enrolled in the program will be given a Works with Well trademark, signifying that the product aligns with specific features or thresholds in the WELL Building Standard, which is determined by a third party that reviews and validates each product.
To date, WELL has been adopted by nearly 44,000 projects spanning 4.85 billion square feet of real estate across 127, with WELL adoption continuing to surge in the wake of the pandemic.

“Increasingly, companies want to demonstrate how their products support health and well-being,” says Jessica Cooper, IWBI Chief Product Officer.
“To help foster that potential for health leadership, we wanted to provide a robust platform for companies to validate how their products align with health-focused features in WELL.”
Products developed by the early adopters of the program include solutions for air and water quality, lighting and smart building technologies, as well as a mix of design and architectural solutions.
