Samsung is expanding its smart home platform SmartThings’ Music Sync capabilities with a new YouTube Music partnership, allowing users to sync their Philips Hue smart lights to their favorite songs on YouTube Music.
Samsung SmartThings’ Music Sync feature launched in 2022, initially integrating with Philips Hue, which still appears to be the only lighting integration with Music Sync.
According to Samsung, SmartThings Music Sync integrates with “any music app within the Galaxy ecosystem,” and users can sync their lights to their music from Galaxy smartphones or tablets. YouTube Music, however, is a “key partner” in the Galaxy ecosystem, the company says.
With the new YouTube Music integration, Music Sync users can now directly access YouTube Music playlists when users sync their lights up with the rhythms. This capability also includes new buttons that align with familiar YouTube Music settings, such as Relax, party, and Workout.
For example, the Party button on Music Sync will begin playing a party playlist on YouTube Music, and the lighting will shift to a color pattern preset to match the vibe, the company says.
Additional Partners to Join Music Sync Following YouTube Partnership
According to Samsung, SmartThings Music Sync works to create party atmospheres, set lighting for workouts, or synchronize music and colors for children’s activities, offering a wide range of customization options.
The company says Music Sync differentiates itself from other platforms that rely on microphones or have limited access to music sources. Music Sync, meanwhile, provides “accurate content synchronization across any music app within the Galaxy ecosystem,” promising users a truly synchronized music and lighting experience.
The company plans to add additional partner companies to the Music Sync experience later this year. While the Music Sync service currently only works with Philips Hue, SmartThings integrates with other lighting manufacturers, including Commercial Electric, WiZ, AiDot, Arlo, and others.
