Modular smart lighting company Deako says it now has 10 US patents granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and 14 patents internationally with the granting of three new patents for a backplate for plug and play technology, configurability of backplate components, and AI and machine learning.
The company’s backplate system allows installers or users to change out any Deako switch for another without turning off the power or calling an electrician. The company offers both smart switches and dimmers, simple switches and dimmers, motion sensors, smart plugs and more.
Of the three new patents, one is for the easy-to-use safety cover mechanism within the backplate that ensures switches are installed correctly and securely. This is designed to protect homeowners from main voltage when a switch is removed. When a switch is inserted, it locks the switch in place.
Another patent for the backplate system is for technology that enables the backplate to communicate with other devices on the network so people can assign multiple control options and appliances to a single switch.
The other patent recently granted to Deako broadens the company’s artificial intelligence and machine learning portfolio and enhances the company’s ability to anticipate homeowners’ intentions, the company says.

The Deako system adapts to homeowners and anticipates their preferences by lighting a room before someone enters the space. For example, if a user’s routine is to sit down in their home office every morning, lights will turn on and blinds will open when they approach the office to start working for the day.
CEO and Founder Derek Richardson says the patents mark a significant milestone for Deako.
“It’s a true reflection of our ongoing commitment to driving innovation in smart lighting and our dedication to providing cutting-edge technology to builders and new home buyers,” Richardson says. “We are excited about all we have achieved and are immensely proud of our ability to deliver a truly distinct product to our customers.”
The Seattle-based company cites a strong relationship with builder partners including D.R. Horton, Meritage Homes, Toll Brothers, Stone Martin, and the company also has an integrator partnership program.
