As the object-based surround sound category continues to build momentum, speaker solutions to fill those height requirements are becoming increasingly popular.
Fulfilling the need for in-ceiling speakers that can do a variety of audio tasks, while fitting into tight spaces, the British audio manufacturer Monitor Audio has launched its new CSS230 in-ceiling speaker.
Available through its American distributor Kevro, the speaker is designed to provide electronics professionals with a speaker that installs into places where traditionally sizes speakers can't fit.
Monitor Audio explains the CSS230 utilizes a new type of backbox design that requires just a two-inch mounting depth. The U.K.-based manufacturer says the speaker employs a “radial array” of C-CAM midrange drivers that surround a 3/4-inch C-CAM gold-dome tweeter, and the CSS230's enclosure utilizes a ported/sealed box cabinet design that provides the option of a plug that can be removed to increase bass response.
Helping installers, the CSS230 also incorporates the company's tri-grip mounting system enables the speaker to mount flush to a ceiling or wall. The CSS230 occupies the same mounting diameter as its 6.5-inch CT products to streamline dealers' installation processes.
Monitor points out the compatibility with its 6.5-inch CT products mounting diameter allows dealers to use its CBS-purple pre-construction bracket during the planning stages of an installation, and the company says the speaker's trimless grille is designed to match lighting fixtures to help create an integrated appearance.
The speaker is specified to produce a frequency response of 100Hz to 30kHz with the enclosure plug installed, and 85Hz to 30kHz with the enclosure plug removed. The 86dB sensitive speaker is also capable of producing SPL levels of more than 103dB, and Monitor rates its impedance at 8 ohms.
