Mr. Robot: Episode eps2.0unm4sk-pt1.tc
Coming from covering the IT and cybersecurity space at My TechDecisions, Mr. Robot has been a great watch, featuring a group of hackers that want to start a Occupy Wall Street-esque revolution by hacking E Corp., the largest conglomerate known to mankind. As such, they launch attacks against E Corp’s executives, including against the smart home of an executive.
In the episode, the executive’s smart home devices and systems – even the hot water heater – become under the control of the vigilante hackers. In the episode, the executives, home audio system, home theatre, security system, garage door and lights go haywire, and the water in the shower becomes scalding hot. This leads the executive to call the apparent company that installed the systems to complain about her “smart home package.”
The episode doesn’t reveal how the hackers were able to access the smart home’s system, but according to cybersecurity experts, it is absolutely feasible. The series is hailed by many cybersecurity experts to be a fairly accurate representation of hacking and cybersecurity. The end goal was to kick the homeowner out of the rogue smart home and use the house as the group’s base of activities.
