Sony BDP-S790 4K Blu-ray Player
Grant Clauser | 04/25 08:07 AM, 0 Comments
With all the hubbub surrounding 4K video, there's one bit of info to keep in mind: there’s no 4K content. Now there is, sort of. Sony has begun selling its 4K-upscaling Blu-ray player, the BDP-S790 ($249.99). The BDP-S790, which is available now online from Sony and from dealers starting May 6, 2012, doesn’t actually play 4K discs or 4K content, because there isn't any. It upscales existing 1080p Blu-ray movies to 4K, sending that onto the receiver, 4K projector or 4K HDTV. Now you’re probably thinking “so what, don’t 4K… View this story

Samsung solidified its spot atop the U.S. LCD TV market in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to IHS iSuppli (IHS), by accounting for nearly one-quarter (23.6 percent) of LCD TV shipments in the U.S. Shipments of Samsung LCD TVs reached a record high for a quarter, representing the largest share of the market ever posted by Samsung on a quarterly basis. Irvine, Calif.-based Vizio was a distant second with a 15.4 percent share of the market, while LG (12.4 percent), Sony (8 percent) and Toshiba (7.8 percent) round out… View this story

Neal Manowitz Sony
CE Pro Editors | 01/23 01:04 PM, 0 Comments
Since joining Sony Electronics in 1993, Neal Manowitz has helped the popular manufacturer to launch its digital still camera products and develop its custom installation business. Manowitz’s latest task is Sony’s 4K home video initiative. During CEDIA Expo 2011, Sony surprised the specialty A/V world when it introduced its VPL-VW1000ES projector, which offers a native 4K image at a price point that shatters the industry’s previous model for a 4K product. CE Pro asked Manowitz to explain how Sony approached the development of the VPLVW1000ES, and how it plans to… View this story

Sony is selling its nearly 50 percent stake in an LCD joint venture with Samsung Electronics to Samsung for $940 million, according to Reuters. Reuters says Sony has been seeking an exit from the seven-year-old joint venture and had previously cut its contribution by 15 percent. Sony is seeking cheaper outsourcing alternatives for its TVs than funding this joint venture, says Reuters. The partnership was originally established so Sony could be guaranteed supplies for its flat screen business. What effect, if any, this move means for CE pros seeking supplies… View this story

ADI's recent announcement that it will soon be carrying Sony products does not just mean greater access for dealers to more SKUs from the well-known brand, but it represents a major focus by the distributor on the A/V market. One of the problems facing many CE pros with flat panel lines, especially during the holiday season, has been lack of access due to limited inventory. This new distribution deal eliminates that problem, according to ADI president Michael Flink. "Sony dealers have to be authorized, which makes sense for Magnolia HiFi,… View this story
