Today during CES 2019, Roku, Inc., and TCL announced the two companies are working together to produce 8K televisions by late 2019.
The long-time business partners are leveraging TCL's Gen 11 LCD factory panel, while Roku is developing 8K reference hardware that TCL will be the first to license.
“Together TCL and Roku have delivered millions of smart TVs to consumers across North America that they love to use,” notes Chas Smith, senior vice president, general manager, Roku TVs.
“In designing and delivering 8K TCL Roku TVs we will reach new heights by offering beautiful picture quality combined with America's number one TV streaming platform.”
Chris Larson, senior vice president, TCL, says the latest collaboration between the two companies represents both brands shared goals of breaking new ground in the consumer video market.
“TCL and Roku have worked together closely for years driving innovation forward to give consumers brilliant picture-quality TVs with the best smart TV OS. As such, TCL's devices have won numerous awards and we have quickly grown to the number two brand smart TVs in the U.S., states Larson.
“We are thrilled to continue to break boundaries as we to plan to build televisions that push the limits of picture quality and offer TV models with built-in voice control.”
Roku Channel Ready
Roku plans to use its Roku OS operating system for the 8K TVs, providing customers access to more than half a million movies and TV shows.
Roku OS also provides original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with hardware reference designs and allows OEM partners to build TVs that incorporate smart entertainment technologies.
Through the Roku platform, consumers can search across hundreds of channels and see results by price, as well as content that is currently live if there is an HDTV antenna installed as part of the home system.
In addition, the Roku Channel offers more than 10,000 free, ad-supported movies and TV episodes. Later in January 2019, customers will also be able to access and subscribe to premium services such as EPIX, Showtime and Starz.
TCL is exhibiting at CES 2019 in Las Vegas on Jan. 8-11 in booth number 12929.
