As the dust settles on another CEDIA Expo, it’s clear that 2024 marked a pivotal year for our industry. As a woman in leadership within the AV integration sector, I found this year’s expo particularly enlightening, offering a unique perspective on where we stand and where we’re headed.
Key Takeaways from CEDIA Expo 2024
The dominant theme was undoubtedly artificial intelligence (AI). A lot of the technology showcased this year had an AI component, signaling a major shift in our approach to home integration. The standout product in my mind was Portal’s new AI capability tool designed to streamline the proposal and scope of work writing process. This innovative solution allows integrators to walk through a client’s home, record video, and verbally describe desired installations. The AI then generates a comprehensive scope of work and proposal, including product details, revolutionizing our workflow, saving time and improving accuracy.
Another significant takeaway was the continued importance of buying groups. Organizations like HTSA, ProSource, and Azione Unlimited maintained a strong presence, offering valuable networking opportunities and knowledge sharing.
Innovative Technologies and Trends
Beyond AI, several other innovative technologies and trends caught my attention. The continued evolution of smart home integration, advancements in energy management systems, and the growing focus on user experience design all point to an exciting future for our industry.
One trend that stood out was the increasing importance of social media presence. Many attendees approached my team to discuss our approach to social media strategy and content, highlighting the growing importance of digital marketing and brand building.

Observations on Diversity and Inclusion
This year’s expo seemed smaller compared to previous years, but what it lacked in size, it made up for in quality of content and diversity of participation. There was a noticeable increase in women’s participation, both as vendor representatives and integration company attendees.
We saw more women in business attire or company-branded clothing, demonstrating product knowledge and industry expertise, rather than “booth babes” which were typically staffed as a way to get attendees’ attention. The difference was particularly noticeable and welcome. While a few holdouts remained, they seemed out of place in an environment increasingly focused on professionalism and expertise. This shift is significant, as it brings fresh perspectives and helps to balance the traditionally male-dominated field.
Being a woman in this industry can be challenging because in a room full of men, you can feel out of place. This sentiment is widely shared among many female colleagues, underscoring the ongoing need for greater inclusivity and awareness in our industry.
The Role of Mentorship and Networking
As a woman in leadership, I’ve experienced firsthand the importance of mentorship and networking in our industry. Not only do we share knowledge with each other, but it can be helpful for career development, confidence-building, and fostering valuable connections. The Women in CI Luncheon continues to exemplify this by showcasing speakers like Sylvia Acevedo, who offered insightful takeaways including “Failure is the first attempt at learning” and “The first person you have to convince you can do something is YOU.” I look forward to this part of the expo every year, and this year did not disappoint!
My advice to women in this industry is simple: push forward. Engage in industry events, join buying groups, run for the board of directors, and aim for leadership positions. Seek out mentorship opportunities, whether through formal programs like the Wave of Influence or informal connections within your organization. Remember, your expertise and determination are your greatest assets in shaping both your career and the future of our industry.
Progress, Challenges, and Future of Women in the Industry
The progress made in supporting women in the AV and smart home industries over the past few years is encouraging. We’re seeing more women in leadership roles, more diverse representation at industry events, and a growing recognition of the value that different perspectives bring to our field. Over the next five to ten years, I expect to see more women in C-Suite positions, on company boards, and leading innovation in our field, not because of our gender or to fulfill diversity and inclusion requirements, but because we’re more than qualified for those positions.
In a historically male-dominated industry, women are not just overcoming barriers, but we also continue to actively transform the AV and smart home landscapes. We’re dismantling outdated stereotypes and combating unconscious biases, ensuring equal opportunities for advancement, and positioning ourselves as key catalysts for positive change and sustainable growth across the field.
CEDIA Expo 2024 demonstrated that our industry is evolving in meaningful ways. We’re embracing new technologies, becoming more inclusive, and focusing on holistic business success. As a woman in leadership, I’m excited to be at the forefront of this change, influencing others and helping to shape the future of our industry. We must continue to innovate, diversify, and adapt to meet the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.
