Today, Sonos and IKEA announced the first two products in the SYMFONISK line of connected speakers: A $99 bookshelf speaker and a $179 table lamp with an included Wi-Fi speaker.
The table lamp features a speaker similar to the Sonos:One in design and performance, and has a volume control dial on the lamp body and track control buttons on the base plate.
The bookshelf speaker is the smallest Sonos speaker on the market and is designed to fit into Ikea’s existing bookshelves. It can also be used as a shelf if customers mount it to a wall with the included bracket. Mounted this way, the speaker can hold up to 6.6 pounds.
The two speakers act like any other Sonos product. They can be connected to an existing Sonos system and are controllable via the Sonos app available on iOS and Android.
In addition, the speakers support Apple AirPlay 2, allowing users to play music and issue voice commands via Siri.
Combining Sonos Audio and IKEA Home Decor
The goal of the SYMFONISK line is to combine sound technology with home furnishings, allowing homeowners to both improve their at-home sound and add to their decor with one product.
“Creating atmosphere and convenience are central in the creation of the IKEA Home Smart concept, and the SYMFONISK range are perfectly designed with that in mind. IKEA is always looking for ideas that improve life at home. By integrating technology with home furnishing products and solutions we can do that in an even better way,” says Björn Block, business leader for IKEA Home Smart at IKEA Sweden.

“This partnership has always been about our two companies’ shared passion, values and knowledge. IKEA and Sonos recognize the importance of great sound and its potential to positively affect life at home for many people. We set out to create products neither of us would or could develop independently.
“To this end, since music and light are both instrumental in creating a sense of place, we developed a product that can deliver both – the SYMFONISK lamp speaker”, says Tad Toulis, VP of design at Sonos.
While integrators won't be able to stock the SYMFONISK line, they can continue to suggest Sonos or other whole-house audio systems that offer high-performance sound without looking bulky or altering a home's existing decor.
