The resurgence of audio couldn't come at a better time for music lovers and the consumer electronics industry. Fueled by the growth of high-resolution audio, the rebirth of vinyl, and the maturation of streaming audio, there are lots of reasons to invest into a quality home audio system. Providing homeowners with a high-performance audio solution to play their favorite records, high-res audio downloads, and even low-fidelity streaming services is the speaker company Magico.
Showcasing the company's engineering prowess, the newly announced M6 floorstanding from Magico emanates from its M-project. Magico says the M6 represents the culmination of its latest design concepts, which includes the integration of aerospace materials and design.
And it's only $172,000 for the pair.
Magico M6 Loudspeaker Engineered from the Ground Up
A close examination of Magico's M6 loudspeaker finds that it starts with a six-sided, monocoque enclosure made from a 1/2-inch carbon fiber.
Similar to the external shell of an F-35 fighter jet, the M6 is said to utilize a construction technique that increases the structural strength-to-weight ratio by a factor of 60, while reducing its overall weight by 50 percent. Morerover, Magico says the speaker enclosure's advanced construction techniques reduce its dimensions by 30 percent without reducing the cabinet's internal volume.
Other design elements of the sealed-box enclosure include curved interior and exterior walls that minimize internal standing waves and external diffractions. Employing multiple aluminum billets that include a machined front baffle, the enclosure also includes a reverse horn-shaped sub-enclosure made from a carbon fiber composite to house the midrange driver, and a newly designed three-point MPOD base that provides placement stability within a room for the speaker.
Internally, the speaker incorporates a more efficient version of the tweeter used in Magico's M-Project. The 1.1-inch (28mm) diamond-coated beryllium diaphragm features geometry that was optimized through Finite Element Analysis modeling tools. Using these engineering techniques in combination with the diamond-coated beryllium materials, the company says they were able to maximize the tweeter's performance, which includes its frequency extension, power handling and efficiency.
The M6's midrange driver utilizes Magico's Graphene-based cone material, which it says is 30 percent lighter and 300 percent stiffer than its previous midrange drivers.
Magico points out the midrange driver also uses an underhung neodymium-based motor system with a magnetic field of 1.7 Tesla in a 15mm air gap to “culminate” in a pure, vented titanium voice coil.
Pulling the midrange driver's capabilities together is a 3D-laser scanning technique that facilitates accurate assembly, and a sensitivity rating of 120dB.
Handling the speaker's low-frequency extension is a trio of 10.5-inch woofers. The woofer uses a multi-wall carbon and Nanographene cone and an underhung motor system that is engineered to minimize eddy currents. The woofer's magnet system controls a 5-inch titanium voice coil that produces 1-inch of excursion to produce sound pressure levels (SPL) up to 120dB at 50Hz measured at one meter.
All five drivers are controlled via Magico's Elliptical Symmetry Crossover topology that incorporates components from Mundorf of Germany.
The Calif.-based company adds the crossover network maximizes frequency bandwidth, while preserving phase linearity, and minimizing intermodulation distortion.
