For Kaleidescape fans, news that the company is offering downloadable movies and TV shows for the first time is a dream come true. “It’s one of the only things that was missing,” says one dealer. The new Kaleidescape Store opened this week with a couple thousand movies from Warner Bros. (The company told me that the store would also offer TV episodes at launch, but I’m not seeing any. Kaleidescape dealers are reacting mostly positively to the news that customers will now be able to download HD movies and TV episodes to Kaleidescape dealers. Today, the new Kaleidescape Store opens with thousands of titles from Warner Bros., the first licensing partner for Kaleidescape’s first digital content service. Kaleidescape is finally delivering downloaded content to its pricey movie servers, thanks to a new online store populated with titles from Warner Brothers Digital Distribution (WBDD). Warner is Kaleidescape’s first licensing partner, but the plan is to attract many others. When it launches today at store.kaleidescape.com, the new service will offer roughly 2,000 feature films and TV episodes, adding about 500 new titles per week until all 3,000 Warner flicks are loaded. The DVD CCA vs. Kaleidescape saga continues, with a judge recently extending the stay of an injunction that would have required the manufacturer to cease development of its DVD movie servers until all appeals are exhausted. The injunction was ordered in March of this year, after the DVD CCA (Copy Control Association) won the latest battle in its lawsuit against Kaleidescape. The DVD CCA, which licenses the Content Scramble System (CSS) copy-protection scheme for DVD players, enjoined Kaleidescape from selling its flagship DVD movie servers because they do not require… View this story
