The Recording Academy Producers & Engineers Wing has announced the release of its “Recommendations for Hi-Resolution Music Production.”
This project is the result of three years of research, and the group says this new set of technical guidelines joins other important papers it has previously published that promote best practices in audio recording.
“The release of this new set of recommendations is a milestone,” says Maureen Droney, managing director, The Recording Academy Producers & Engineers Wing. “We are extremely excited by the collaborative efforts and shared vision of our industry towards the goal of providing consumers with studio-quality music listening. We are proud to be a partner in this initiative and also very grateful to all of the recording professionals who contributed their thoughts and expertise to this important document.”
Grammy-Winning Standards
The recommendations were developed by a group of leading Recording Academy members, including numerous multiple Grammy Award-winning engineers and producers, and included input from a cross section of the recording industry.
The document covers a variety of topics including:
- High-resolution audio definitions
- Hardware and software considerations
- Recording and mixing parameters
- Pros and cons of upsampling
- Provenance
- Other important issues
The debut of the document coincides with “Stream the Studio—The Next Wave in Subscription Music,” a panel sponsored by DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group, which was held at the Music Biz 2017 conference in Nashville.
In addition to Droney, the Recording Academy points out the panel also featured Richard Burgess, A2IM, Ty Roberts, Universal Music Group; Howie Singer, Warner Music Group, and Darren Stupak, Sony Music Entertainment.
The panel was moderated by Marc Finer, senior director, DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group. The panel discussion follows an announcement made earlier this spring in which the consumer electronics companies Bluesound, MQA, Astell & Kern, and Onkyo Pioneer USA, joined DEG's Hi-Res Audio Committee.
