Taking a few moments away from the busy schedules, the Video Guys have once again joined the CE Pro Podcast to discuss the hottest topics in the world of home video.
The experts — Joel Silver of the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF), Jason Dustal of Murideo and AVPro Edge, and Robert Zohn of Value Electronics brought their A-games to the latest edition of the Video Guys Podcast, an hourlong conversation covering a range of topics.
Dustal and Silver began the conversation recapping their recently completed ISF training events in Europe and the support Sony provides them in the region.
Silver pointed out Sony’s efforts to make its consumer televisions perform as close as possible to its professional post-production monitors. Taking it a step further, Silver also emphasized the role a room environment plays in system performance.
“The room environments and your capabilities to [display] what the artist intended, and that’s been our theme song since 1994, which, when I think about it, it’s a long time, but we’ve been at this for a while we’ve made some progress, not enough progress. It’s some progress,” commented Silver.
As the conversation continued Silver went on to discuss the continuing acceptance of bigger screen sizes, and at one point he asked Dustal jokingly, how can someone make their screen bigger if they don’t have the budget? Both experts quickly responded move the chair to get closer to the screen.
Video Guys’ Best Practice Recommendations on CE Pro Podcast
Transitioning the conversation to the pending best practices recommendations from the CTA (Consumer Technology Association) and CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association)
Dustal and Silver noted how the RP22 Immersive Audio Best Practices can help integrators improve their clients’ surround sound experiences, and now through the efforts of the CTA and CEDIA, work has begun on new video best practice guidelines. Showing their optimism, both experts are expecting the new best video practices to be announced in about a year.
Without going too deep into the topic of video calibration Silver then asked Dustal what he would do to calibrate a video if he only had a few minutes to perform the calibration.
“Energy savings off,” Dustal immediately responded. “We’ve measured this millions of times and just for reference, we did measure this at Sony. We put the TV in a better picture mode that lets us actually make adjustments.
“And, you know, based off a preset, [we thought] let’s start ourselves from a good position. So we turned off energy savings … and we’ve just done some of the very basics white, level, black, level kind of [adjustments].”
Integrators Can Work with Designers for Aesthetics
At about the halfway point of the podcast Silver, Dustal and Zohn arrived on the topic of working with interior designers and architects. Silver stressed the importance of integrators bridging the gap with these professions so everyone can work together to have an aesthetically pleasing home environment that includes high-performance AV systems.
Wrapping up the podcast Zohn pointed out all the work that goes into making a TV series or a movie and how today’s modern components can bring out the best attributes of the work that goes into these productions.
“It is nice to see the advancements in our industry every year, and this is one of the bigger upgrade years for all video products that I’ve seen in a long time. TVs are greatly improved. Even the projectors like you [Jason Dustal] were saying are really jumping ahead,” added Zohn.
“This is entertainment in your house and think about when they make a Hollywood movie. What goes into making that movie writing, the script. photographing, photographing it … acting in it. So much goes into creating this content, storytelling content that I want you to see it in your house with all the emotion and all the effort that goes into making this film the great film that it is.”
