Why the Heck is ADT at CES 2013?

ADT sets up booth at CES 2013, seeking exposure for ADT Pulse and home security after spinoff from Tyco.

ADT (NYSE: ADT) has a big booth in the south hall of the LVCC at CES 2013. Why? Are they trying to sell security systems to CES attendees?

Sure, they’ll take your business but ADT is in Vegas to get exposure for itself as a company (following the spinoff from Tyco last October) and a partner to product manufacturers and service providers.

“Since we’re newly public, it’s a good time to showcase our technology,” says Amy Kabcenell, director of residential marketing.

The company is demonstrating its traditional security systems but mostly will promote the ADT Pulse home automation and remote management system it launched in 2010 – arguably the first mass-market deployment of home automation in the U.S.

Relationship-building is a key motivation for ADT’s presence at CES, according to Kabcenell: “If you look at our full ecosystem, it is an ecosystem of partners.”

One of ADT’s key partners is iControl, developer of the platform that powers Pulse. ADT wants potential partners to know that the platform is open, and the company is inviting other suppliers to join the ecosystem – like Kwikset, whose Z-Wave-enabled locks will be shown at the ADT booth, and Jasco, which provides lighting controls and variety of other Z-Wave devices.

In a pre-show tour of the exhibit, Kabcenell showed the lifestyle venues that ADT will use to showcase its technologies. There’s a baby’s room, for example, to demonstrate the surveillance capabilities built into Pulse and its cloud-based architecture.

A utility room demonstrates how Pulse enables smart energy management and can tie into utility service programs.

There is also a small business depicted in the ADT booth. Kabcenell explains that Pulse can enhance productivity and security in commercial venues, allowing managers to check the comings and goings of employees and guests, monitor energy usage, and obviously secure the place.

And then there will be some “proof of concepts” shown at the booth. But you’ll have to visit to check them out.

The ADT booth is surprisingly hip, with modern décor, very cool tradeshow-faux-wood-flooring and an open feel.

When I mentioned that I had pictured a more fuddy-duddy vibe at the ADT booth and was pleasantly pleased by the modern look, Kabcenell was thrilled.

“That’s the image we want to project.”

Look at ADT attempting to revamp their image. They seem to energized by the split from Tyco. Here’s a cool visual of the history of ADT: http://yourlocalsecurity.com/resources/adt-timeline
