Axis Gear Turns Manual Shades into Motorized … in 2018

We’ve known about the retrofittable “Gear” shade controller from Axis for a while. It’s a handy DIY product that snaps over the existing (looped) cord and winds it up and down on a schedule or at the press of a button on the controller or app.

The Bluetooth version ($199) shipped to Indiegogo backers a few months ago. “Limited quantities” will ship in January 2018 to some customers who put down a $19.90 deposit, with the next batch shipping in spring.

COO Manu Menon tells me the forthcoming ZigBee version ($249) is expected to ship to backers in October. At first, it will be compatible with SmartThings but Menon says Control4 integration is coming.

A Z-Wave version is “currently under development,” Menon says, but no release date is available.
